Last night's show at the Electric Factory highlighted two different kinds of punk. First up was Be Your Own Pet's sloppy, messy, disorganized punk. Lots of slamming and banging and screaming and talking, but not a lot of structure or melody or diversity. And not, sadly enough, much that was all that interesting. They're fun, but they don't have a lot of substance. Their lyrics are generally silly fluff about going on adventures in the jungle, having food fights, or just having fun. Really the best thing about them is lead singer Jemina Pearl, a cute little blonde who writhed and jerked and shook and bounced so very much, it's amazing she didn't get whiplash. Apparently there were a drummer, a guitar player, and a bass player behind her somewhere, but it was hard to look away from sexy Jemina as she banged her head or stood with one hand on her hip, shouting into the microphone in a voice and cadence reminiscent of some strange mixture of Gwen Stefani and Kim Gordon.

Be Your Own Pet are endorsed by Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore's label is putting out their records), which is practically enough right there to make us like them. But it turns out their music is good, too! As R5 Productions says, they sound like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were still good. Crazy, brutal rock with a lead singer who even sounds a bit like Karen O. But they rock in their own right, delivering pure, full volume, head-banging thrash music. And they're playing the First Unitarian tonight at 7:30PM with the very '60s retro rock Black Lips (whose live show is apparently crazy wild, involving violence, nudity, arson, and flying bodily fluids - so be warned!) and "demented and manic" local band Clockcleaner. Doesn't sound like an appropriate group of bands for an all ages show in a church, but...whatever! Rock and roll!!!
Fun around town, for $10 or less:
Is it silly to preview a show that's sold out? We don't know. But we're going to do it anyway, because this is Sonic Youth. That's right, Sonic Youth, the gigantic, mighty ancestors of today's indie scene. It's their 25th anniversary and they're still rocking the hardcore experimental punk/indie stuff. Just look at their latest album, Rather Ripped, which came out yesterday. It's the same kind of amazingly powerful, imaginative art-music they've been doing for years. Which is both exciting and a bit boring at the same time. But still, it's Sonic Youth!! They are it. They are a huge cornerstone in the foundations of rock. They made cool. Everybody should see them at least once.
