Let it be said, first, that I am glad this little drama exists and look forward to seeing more.

Haverford Township Commissioner Fred Moran went on trial yesterday for "his alleged attempt to extort $500,000 from the developers of the Haverford State Hospital site in exchange for granting them zoning approval." Thanks in part to the influence of Betty Thompkins, a microscopist in Albert Einstein Medical Center's pathology department and one-time U. Penn researcher, Central High School "will be the first high school in the nation to receive the Phenom, a $72,000 tabletop electron...

We're a little narcissistic. We have a Google News Alert set up to tell us anytime anyone mentions Phillyist on the internets. Usually, it's just a fleeting reference (like a "fleeting expletive," we suppose) to us on someone else's blog – quite often another -Ist blog.

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

Do you like to bake? Phillyist sure does. While we admit that we sometimes do the brownies out of a box, the cookies are always homemade. Alas, though we love the process of baking, and the way the apartment smells with chocolate chips melting in the oven, those pesky New Year’s resolutions about eating better keep us from firing up the KitchenAid mixer too often. What's a baker to do?

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

Kudos to NBC 10 for airing a live election special Monday night dealing with the issues and candidates in the Delaware Valley. Steve Highsmith handles things like this very well, but co-anchor Tim Lake seemed like a lightweight sitting next to him. Among the highlights: conservative talk show host Michael Smerconish and Democratic analyst Rob McCord provided a nice right/left debate on some issues and tactics. WCAU really did their election coverage - pre, during and post - right.

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

In all fairness to Scherherazade, you won't actually see ; but you will be treated to dozens and dozens of three-minute (or less) shorts; as many as they can cram into an hour and a half. You'll have to go to both parts 1 (Feb. 13th - 17th) and 2 (Feb. 20th - 24th) to see them all, but just think - with this many plays under your belt, you'll be well ahead of your "high culture" quota for the year.

Phillyist is an American Idol fan. We will happily own up to an obsession with the cheesefest. It's a love/hate relationship, truly. While we never vote and wouldn't be caught dead with a schmaltzy album of any of the winners, we're really in it for the snark factor.

It's been a bad year for West Philly dining. First we lost Betty Rastelli, former owner of the Marigold Dining Room, then legendary deliman Bobby Koch, and now Phillyist is sad to report that Solomon Amare, owner of Dahlak Restaurant, passed away of a sudden fatal heart attack earlier this past weekend.

Dear Philadelphia's Phreshmen,
