Nichole Canuso Dance Company's Wandering Alice was, far and away, one of the best pieces of the 2008 Philadelphia Live Arts Festival. And when we see performances we like, we want to support the organizations that produce them—so take this post as Phillyist's official endorsement of NCDC, which will be having what sounds like a pretty kick-ass fundraiser.

Feed your dance hunger and a scholarship fund at the same time this Saturday at The 5th Annual Jam for Jess. Featured performers include Aujus Ninja & Ephrat, Dance Fusion NY, Alchemy Dance Company, International Dance Crew, Yareli & The Sahara Girls, and many others, and all proceeds benefit The Jessica Karrat Dance Scholarship Fund. Jessica, who died in a car accident at age 13, loved to dance and loved Philly. The scholarship “seeks to provide aspiring dancers with the opportunity to fulfill their dreams whether to start a dance career or continue with their dance education.” Pony up your $20 and support the young-uns!

It's the holiday season, so many of us are in a charitable mood. Certainly, there are good feelings to be had from performing acts of selflessness, and we at Phillyist encourage you to donate your time, money, or a toy this holiday season. Sometimes you get the opportunity to contribute to a good cause and have a lot of fun at the same time. Thursday night, you'll get one such opportunity. WXPN is presenting a...
Girls Rock Philly, a day camp for girls ten through eighteen years of age, is set to run this summer from August 6-11. The camp teaches aspiring female rock stars how to play instruments, write songs, create merchandise, sell merchandise - basically just about everything they'd need to know to start their own band. Applications for campers are being accepted until June 30.
Justin Solonynka has been performing his virtuosic piano blend of "Jazzical Fusion Pop 'n' Roll" for audiences throughout the greater Philadelphia area for the last ten years. He'll be performing at the World Cafe Live, Friday, April 13, 2007, at 7:30PM. Now this isn't just any performance, this is specifically for The Key of Hope benefit.
As you contemplate the luck of the Irish and your hangover this weekend (Erin Express Ho!), consider stopping by Fergie's Pub on Sunday evening from 4-7 pm. They'll be hosting a benefit for poet Frank Sherlock. Frank was rushed to the hospital on January 22nd with what turned out to be a bad case of meningitis, requiring emergency surgery. Since poetry doesn't often come with health insurance, and Frank was in a two-month window of not having coverage, his friends are uniting to ease some of the burden with an Emergency Fund to offset his medical costs.
This holiday sure can suck if you haven't found that perfect partner, mistress, or craigslist missed connection to share it with. It's cool, don't resign yourself to an evening of watching Lifetime alone just yet, because BCKSEET Productions is gearing up for the third annual anti-Valentines Day concert/singer/songwriter competition.
Jagshemash!
What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.
As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it the -ists ponder?
A unique event is taking place this Saturday afternoon. It's the Quest for the Holy Grail Benefit Bike Race! It's only five bucks to enter, and you'll be benefiting a cyclist who was injured by an uninsured motorist attempting to flee the scene of an accident. So it's for a good cause, and it'll really be something to see. Because not only is it a race (with 10 check points), it's also a scavenger hunt, with the Holy Grail itself as the apparent object of the hunt (although we're not sure how that's going to work, as the thing is notoriously hard to find - and is sometimes guarded by nasty, insulting Frenchmen). Prizes will be given out at the end, with extra points going to those who donate, and to those who come in costume! Of course, you don't have to come in costume; all cyclists are welcome. But we hope there will be some Sir Robins and Sir Lancelots out there, perhaps with bloody killer rabbits attached to their throats.
C'mon, admit it: you haven't washed that filthy old car of yours since Clinton was in office. So why not take it up to the parking lot next to Walt's Circle Tavern - right off Oxford Circle on Route 1 in Northeast Philly - between noon and 5PM tomorrow and get it washed by the Philly Roller Girls? (Check out our fun interview with them here.) They'll do it for you (on their skates, we hope) for only $8 (with a half-price discount for police and fire vehicles), and the money will go to fund their new travel team, who are headed to Las Vegas in November to face the Sin City Roller Girls. While you're there, you can pick up tickets to the league's first ever championship bout, which takes place September 10th, and features competition between two undefeated teams: the Broad Street Butchers and the Philthy Britches.

God, we're so sick of
that we want to kill anyone and everyone that
makes a "something on a something" joke. But then we realized that
there was no way we could ever win this fight, and, hell, if you can't
beat them, we might as well join them. And with that, you have the
theme of this weeks' Gothamist network post.
