Fall-themed Martinis at Rum Bar

When Phillyist heard Rum Bar (2005 Walnut St.) was adding some new fall-themed martinis to their menu, we sent out our resident pumpkin junkies to investigate. Since we've heaped the love on Rum Bar in the past, Adam Kanter, owner/manager of Rum Bar, hooked us up with some samples so we could report back on how to get your fix of fall flavors in liquid form. (Sometimes chewing is just too much work!) With more than 140 varieties of rum and three levels of rum-flight programs for patrons to conquer (these guys do not mess around), we knew Rum Bar's fall drink offerings would not disappoint.

*Yes, it's Wednesday. But we needed some extra time to prepare our new Foodsday Tuesday feature, Quick Nosh, which will feature snack-sized servings of food news that we couldn't dedicate a full post to. Check out the first one at the bottom of this post. Got a Philly food tip? Send 'em over!

Three Is the New Four

Well hello there. You mean you're sitting at your computer right now? Whatever for? Didn't you know that the whole world (or at least, the world of America) has decided to make the Third of July nearly as important as the Fourth? That means you're supposed to be down the shore, or participating in Welcome America festivities or, um, getting drunk.

Phillyist Does Mojitofest

Last night, Phillyist was invited to Mojitofest at G Lounge, where there were drinks, competition, drinks, a light up wall of multi-colored squares, and more drinks. Looking back on our night of debauchery and muddled mint, we are eager to share the experience: the highs, the lows, and most importantly, the drinks!

Foodsday Tuesday: Cinco de Drunk-o

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. Hell, it's not even a holiday celebrated in all of Mexico. (Wikipedia actually has a decent explanation here.) But, here in America, we like to use the holiday as an excuse to get wasted anyway. (It's like St. Patrick's Day, but with tequila.)

Savor that lager tonight and celebrate the Yuengling's two million-barrel production, which brings it closer than ever to beating Sam Adams. And since the big boys (think Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors) have been bought out by overseas outfits, that would make Yuengling the best-selling American-owned brewery. Although we're big fan's of Sam's wheat beer, there's nothing quite like a locally-brewed bottle of lager to cleanse the palate and clear the mind. Of course, it also bears mentioning that many a blurry night of karaoke has come and gone, leaving only a crowd of empty lager bottles in its wake.

Foodsday Tuesday: Prime-al Urges

Last week, your Phillyist editors headed down to the lounge at Stephen Starr's Barclay Prime (shown above in all its gentlemen's smoking club glory) to check out the upscale steakhouse's new pub menu. It's tough work, we know, but some bloggers gotta do it. Although not exactly what you'd consider cheap eats (menu prices range from $9 to $29), we certainly weren't let down by the offerings. The juicy mini burgers, made from a combination of meats you wouldn't usually consider grinding, were a portent of things to come: the actual pub menu features a $19 dry-aged burger with cheddar and a side of tater tots. We weren't sure we'd be paying twenty bucks for a full-sized version of the burger we ate, but then the addition of the homemade, perfectly crunchy tater tots (which, admittedly, were a little cold by the time we got to them—but miraculously not soggy) may make it worth the ticket price. More impressive to us, though, was the truffled mac and cheese, a $16 concoction that includes smoky Neuske bacon and fresh English peas. We couldn't get enough. In fact, we may have even snagged second portions of the carb-laden cheesy dish when the very friendly staff came around with trays of the stuff.
