Phillyist Playlist: The Sword at the Wachovia Center

The Sword (MySpace) is not your little brother's heavy metal. The becomes clear about ten seconds into "The Sundering," the instrumental opening track of The Sword's recent album, . There is no funk or hip-hop influence, no lyrics about feeling like a social outcast, and no compromise in The Sword's music. No, this is good old, back-to-roots, retro metal. Like other Phillyist favorite Avenged Sevenfold, The Sword is bucking the "nu metal" trend to bring back guitar-fueled metal with lyrics ripped from sci-fi and fantasy literature, Norse mythology, and occult writing.

Are you having a rough week at work? Thinking about playing hookie Friday, but for some reason can't? Do you just that when you get out of work tomorrow, you're gonna be in a worked up, somewhat angry mood? Well you're in luck, because tomorrow night the Rockstar Taste of Chaos tour hits the Tweeter Susquehana Bank Center. And with a lineup headed by Avenged Sevenfold and including Atreyu, Bullet for My Valentine, blessthefall, and Idiot Pilot, the show should be a great outlet for all that pent-up aggression.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Tuesday post only collects the early announcements, so definitely check back on Thursday for the latest ticket news.

A sad week for LAist as they lose their trusted and amazing editor Tony Pierce to the LA Times, but what a blast his last week was. He shared his 25 Favorite CDs of 2007 and wrote a great review of just a good movie, No Country For Old Men. At UCLA, thousands of students celebrated the end of their quarter by running around campus in their undies (lots of photos in a two-part photo essay, one, two). That wasn't the only photo essay either: Joss Whedon/Mutant Enemy friends and Star Trek actors all joined in at the Writers Strike and KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas brought two nights of amazing bands that included Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park (Part I), Modest Mouse, Muse, Spoon and The Killers (Part II). Not only is L.A. a great music town, it has just been named the best city for bookish types. For those who are looking for something a little more active, American Gladiators are back (yes!) and if that's not enough, how about a Christmas gift of action and adventure?

Over the last couple months, this Phillyist has developed a habit of bringing earplugs to concerts, and it's a practice we're going to continue. Not just because they majorly reduce the whole post-concert aural equivalent of cottonmouth and ear-ringing. But actually, earplugs really improve the concert-going experience by cutting down the effect of crowd noise and letting you focus on the music. Plus, in many cases, when music is played at an excessive volume, it...

No matter how much your musical tastes evolve over time, sometimes you can't help but go back to what you liked during your teenage years. When this Phillyist was in junior high, there was one type of music, and only one type of music, emanating from my bedroom stereo: Metal. Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead... you get the idea. Even though the Death CDs have lately collected dust on the shelf in favor of Death Cab for Cutie, the appeal of metal hasn't waned completely. Heck, some of the best non-metal bands out there today have overwhelming metal influences:Coheed and Cambria comes to mind. And really, there's very little that gets the blood pumping like good metal.

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

In case you haven't noticed by now, this Phillyist likes Fair to Midland. A lot. We dug 'em when we saw them in July, so we jumped at the chance to see them again. We walked into the show expecting much the same as we got the first time around, and for the first time, that's exactly what we got. Darroh Sudderth is still a hell of a vocalist but something of a recluse in terms of the personality (or lack thereof) he shows on stage. And they still didn't talk to us between songs, but that could be because they were too busy rehydrating, which they would have needed to do with all the energy they put out in their songs.
