This is going to sound a little stupid, but there was a hell of a lot more running involved in the Great Urban Race than I originally thought there would be. Having done one urban adventure race prior to the GUR, I definitely had certain expectations. Those expecations included puzzle clues, crazy stunts, and of course, covering a pretty decent amount of ground in and around Philadelphia. They did not necessarily include essentially sprinting from Market Street to the Art Museum, booking it all the way down Fairmount to the subway, short break on the subway before running from City Hall to Reading Terminal Market, up and over to 8th and Race, back down to 3rd and Market, then all the way back up 3rd Street to Buckhead Saloon to the finish line.
If the starting line for the Tour de France was in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and if the horde of bicyclists waiting for the sound off included old men in recumbent bikes with motorcycle shields, families on DIY tandems, women with babies strapped front and back, five-year-olds in serious jerseys, and the fresh aura of freedom being pumped in courtesy of "Eye of the Tiger"—it would still be pretty much nothing like great fun had by the 3,000 people waiting to ride at 8 a.m. this past Sunday.
The New York Times' Travel section ran a piece today that calls Philadelphia a "destination city"—something we could have told them years ago. We're happy that The Times has finally decided to show the City of Brotherly Love a little affection (instead of that Sixth Borough crap from a few years ago), but we'd like to point out that their recommended schedule is almost as improbable as the route of the Rocky run.
The best part of this video is definitely the contents of the wad of cash.

It's been quite some time since we showed one of these videos—and this time, the runners aren't just any old tourists.

Looking for a new way to start the weekend? Head on over to the art museum for its Art After 5 series. This week's Art After 5 concert features up-and-coming jazz trumpeter Sean Jones. This 29-year-old has been making a name for himself as the lead trumpeter for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (with Wynton Marsalis). True to their name, these concerts (free with museum admission) go from 5 PM until 8:45 PM on Fridays in the Great Stair Hall.
Rocky and Rambo have sided with the soldier: Sylvester Stallone told Fox News yesterday morning that he is backing John McCain in his presidential bid. We find his justification reasonable, though perhaps less elegant than it could be:

It's that time of year folks, when we all lay down plans for the new year before promptly "forgetting" about them a month later. I'm hoping that making mine public will force me to stick to them... but check back with me in February.
While I would hate to date myself…oh, what am I saying, I date myself just about every time my wife leaves the house for 15 minutes: I am a member of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Being a member of the Art Museum has many benefits. Tops on the list includes getting to see tons of filthy rich white people doing their best Rocky impersonation, the privilege of being serenaded by a sketchy guy selling water out of a cooler while singing a ridiculously loud version of Jodeci’s “If You Think You’re Lonely Now,” and the honor of hearing umpteen jokes from your wife regarding the word “member.” “Wow, there are a lot of members here.” “That member gets priority status.” “Is that where the members enter?” The list could go on forever.
The Philadelphia Marathon is fast approaching (ha!), and those fleet-footed folks are looking for volunteers to help support the thousands of athletes who will converge upon the Art Museum on November 18. Tasks range from stuffing runner bags two weeks out to distributing blankets and Gatorade on race day. You can sign up for a specific job or offer your services as a general volunteer to be dispatched where you're needed most. You can also form a team and sign up together for one of the larger jobs. For more info, contact Terry at GP Cares (215-564-4544).
Ma Phillyist is visiting later this week. We're totally psyched to see her—it's been since the holidays—but unfortunately, her visit coincides with the BlogPhiladelphia "unconference," which we do plan to be at. Mom assures us that it's okay, she can keep herself busy on Friday. But the problem is, she's done most of the busy-keeping activities in the city that we can think of: she's been to the Art Museum, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and a slew of other "major" tourist attractions. She's not a big shopper, and anyway, she'll be car-less, so sending her to King of Prussia for a day isn't really an option. So, what Phillyist wants to know is: where should we dispatch our mother so that she'll be busy and entertained for a full day without us?

As part of Sunoco's Welcome America! series, you'll be able to watch Rocky go the distance tonight on the steps of the Art Museum. And you'll get to watch it for free! This now annual event is a good time for all-- just be sure to bring a blanket. Those steps are hard whether you're pounding 'em or sitting on 'em.
Reader Nick from Pro Cycling Tour sent us a photo of the sign you see above, found above a urinal at a pizzeria near the Art Museum. At first glance, we didn't know why, until we looked carefully at the handwritten note scrawled across it:
Okay, we admit it: we kinda like Katie Couric. So we were super excited to see her visit to CBS3 yesterday. Even if she didn't run up the Art Museum stairs...

Ah, Valentine's Day: refuge of the uninspired lover and bane of the singleton's year. Fear not! We present our annual offbeat V-day guide, guaranteed to add some flair to the red-heart holiday (whose idea was it to put a celebration of love and relationships smack in the middle of the great gray beast February anyway, we ask you?).
