We guess that your reading this means that you survived Monday. Good! We started you off slowly, and without much vigor, so let's see if we can step things up a bit tonight. We have kink, espionage, and poetry. What more could a Phillyist reader ask for?
We're kicking off a new regular feature today, and here it is! "Can't Miss This!" should be going up every weekday for the foreseeable future and, as you may have already guessed, it'll feature a handful of events going on that day in and around the city that we think are so cool you should make sure not to miss them. Hope you enjoy it!
It's nasty out, but don't let the weather keep you from exploring all that this city's artisans and art curators have to offer!
The Inquirer takes a closer look at the Philadelphia policeman who was shot the day before the shooting of Chuck Cassidy, by a gunman who then fled and ultimately drowned in the Schuylkill. They also put the incident in the larger context of criminals in Philadelphia getting released from jail only to commit more crimes and be arrested again, over and over. Meanwhile, another Philadelphia police officer was injured this weekend, this time by...
Moving on from there, we thought we'd maybe hit one of Headlong Dance Theater's First Friday performances (happening at 8PM and 9PM) at the Spirit Wind Studio, across from the Painted Bride. Phillyist loves them some Headlong, and this performance is free, which makes it especially worthy of our affection. Plus, there will be beer.
Holy crap! Somebody forgot to send us the memo, but it seems that July is National Ice Cream Month. That would be far more exciting if there weren't a scant week left before August begins and the happiest month of all (according to our tummies) ends – and we've hardly had a chance to celebrate at all!
It's First Friday—also known to us as the most wonderful time of the month. Public drunkenness is never more fun—or acceptable—in Old City. (Even on Saturday nights. Seriously.)
Choral season is upon us! With both Choral Arts Society and Singing City opening on the same night, it's a tough call. You'll just have to read the descriptions and decide for yourself.
And so, after lots of posts on the subject on Phillyist and a ridiculous amount of hype across the planet, the World Cup begins today. The first game kicks off today at noon Eastern, with hosts Germany taking on Costa Rica. Every match will be broadcast in high definition on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC, with Spanish-language (but standard definition) telecasts of each game on Univision or Telefutura.
Philadelphia does love its centennial celebrations. Here we are, still in the throes of the Franklin tricentennial madness, and we've decided to commemorate a bicentennial birthday, too! The 200th birthday in question in this case belongs to Edwin Forrest, famous Philadelphia actor and namesake of the Forrest Theatre. To mark this milestone anniversary of his birth, Mayor Street has declared today "Edwin Forrest Day."
With the wild weather fluctuations we've been having lately, Phillyist is hard pressed to guess what season it actually is; luckily we have things like Philadelphia's annual Flower Show to remind us that Spring is, indeed, on its way. Running from Sunday, March 5th through Saturday, March 11th, this hayfever-inducing, horticultural hoe down highlights the creativity of professional and amateur florists alike. This year's theme is "Enchanted Spring…A Tribute to Mother Nature," and promises 10 acres of natural masterpieces.
That chill you're feeling? Sure, it could be the frigid temps...but it also might be that you're inadvertantly walking on someone's grave. Sure - we all know that many of our Center City parks are mass burial grounds - but you might be surprised to learn that there are hidden, unmarked graves...in our local cemetaries.
Phillyist has often wondered...just how old is He-Man nemesis Skeletor? (We have lots of spare time on our hands.) On the one hand he has a skull for a face, so we figure he's got to be up there in age. On the other hand, you have to admit, he's got a fit, muscular physique (six-pack abs and all) which suggests he's still in the prime of his life. And then, of course, one has to consider the all-over blue skin. We have no idea what that means.
We’ll be back in Philadelphia tomorrow (after an extended stay with the folks in Texas), and we’ve certainly picked a good theatre weekend to return for!
We’re still Deep in the Heart of Texas, as it were, but our love for performing arts in Philadelphia knows no bounds. Keep reading for exciting upcoming events!
Even while on vacation in Texas, we’re still keeping track of what’s going on in Philadelphia’s Theatre Scene. Read on!
