We're really bad about using Amazon for everything, but we're going to try really really hard to be better. Losing Robin's made us die a little inside.

You may not have heard of G.B.H. We hadn't heard of them before we got a copy of their recently released box set, Race Against Time: The Complete Clay Recordings. But they're a pretty popular band in England. And they're now one of our favorites.
Have you heard of these guys Esque, out of Memphis? The name is pronounced like the suffix, meaning "like" or "having the characteristics of." And what are they like? They're only like the best post-punk, New New Wave band we've heard in a long time is what. We've been listening to their 5-track EP Everyone's Playing, and there's not a track on it we don't love (although "The Escape Artist" is a particular favorite). It's super-fun, extremely danceable, totally tasty pop goodness, and we're not sure why it's not all over the radio right now. Lucky for you, Esque is playing Johnny Brenda's this Wednesday night, so you don't have to wait for radio to catch up: you can go check them out for yourself, along with Gemini Wolf and Leopulde. So go on, and tell them Phillyist sent you!

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.
Damn, The Decemberists just keep getting better. The Crane Wife, released earlier this month, may be their best album yet, perhaps even better than their previous masterpiece, Picaresque, or their fantastically rocking EP, The Tain. What puts it over the top is that now they're apparently doing prog rock. Or maybe they always were and we just hadn't noticed? Regardless, there's a 12 and a half minute, multi-part track called "The Island, Come And See, The Landlord's Daughter, You'll Not Feel The Drowning" on their new album that is unquestionably a progressive rock epic (it even has a keyboard solo!), and it is simply fantastic. And that's not to mention the nearly equally excellent three-part title track. Long live prog! Long live The Decemberists!

Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddie for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bid's Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash.
Who cares if the sunny skies are only temporary? We didn't have to walk to work with the mole people today. Neither, we're sure, did most of the writers at our sister sites.

A quick note about that sold-out Stars show we mentioned yesterday: turns out it's not so sold-out after all, and it's moving! Stars will now be playing, appropriately enough, at The Starlight Ballroom, less than a block away from the original venue, and more tickets are now available at Spaceboy Music (704 South Street), or online at R5Productions (direct ticket link here). Oh, and it's an all ages show now. Got all that?
Thursday night at Beyond Nightclub you can catch one of the more exciting recent indie acts, Stars. (That is, if you've already got your tickets; sorry, we're a little late telling you about the show, and it's already sold out!) Stars is out of Montreal (although they are not to be confused with Of Montreal) and features members of one of Phillyist's favorite indie bands, Broken Social Scene. Head on over to R5 Productions' shows page and scroll down to find some MP3s of their romantic, moving music (or, if you're feeling lazy, use the direct links here). Opening for Stars is a Norwegian fellow performing under the name Magnet (more tracks from the R5 website).
This week’s quote comes from the musical . The players on a baseball team are singing that they aren’t the greatest players, but at least they play with heart. Unfortunately, we can relate. Now, on with the listings!
The answer, of course, is applause. This week's quote comes from the musical . In this scene, a group of gypsies relate how difficult their lives are, but say the payoff is in the applause. We're sure the actors in the productions below would agree. Now, on with the listings!
