The jury deciding the murder case in the death of Sean Patrick Conroy heard yesterday about the disturbing chain of events that led five teenagers to attack him, unprovoked, on the Market-Frankford SEPTA concourse near Market East last year. Today, the jury toured the concourse area where Conroy was attacked and died.
None of the citizens who brought suspected rapist Jose Carrasquillo to justice will be charged. Said Charles Ramsey, "I don't condone violence. Members of the community were very upset over this, and some may have used more force than a trained police officer."
Sunday was another sad day for the Eagles, as they lost to the Baltimore Ravens 36 to 7. In fact, Donovan McNabb was benched for the first time ever after a first half in which he completed only eight of 18 passes for 59 yards and was intercepted twice.
A couple of unrelated incidents involving firearms took place early yesterday morning in Philadelphia. In the first incident, a retired Philly cop working as a pizza delivery man was accosted by three teenagers, one of whom pointed a gun at him while the other two went through his pockets. But the retired cop was able to reach into his pocket and pull out a semiautomatic Glock, which he had a permit to carry. He shot the boy with the gun once in the chest, killing him. The other two would-be robbers ran off. The deliveryman will most likely not be charged in the incident. A few hours later, officers approaching a group of robbery suspects thought they saw a gun in one of the suspects' waistbands and told him to freeze. He reached for the weapon and one of the officers fired his gun into the sidewalk, causing bullet fragments to strike the 17-year-old suspect. He's in stable condition, and a 14-year-old was also apprehended, but the third suspect ran off.
Lawrence Scott Ward, 65, a former marketing professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, is already serving a 15-year sentence in federal prison for trafficking in child porn, but yesterday new child porn charges were lodged against him.
As if the flash flooding wasn’t enough: over 4,000 lightning strikes were recorded in the area last night, along with close to 70,000 power outages.
A 50-year-old Phoenixville man tried to break into a Chester Township general-contracting company off I-95 over the weekend, possibly to steal scrap metal. We know this because he was found yesterday morning hanging by his neck from the garage window. He had apparently stood on a sawhorse and poked his head through the window looking for a latch when he slipped and snapped his neck.
A new veterans cemetery to be known as Washington Crossing National Cemetery is scheduled to start construction in Bucks County next year, with the first burials starting toward the end of the year. The plans for the new cemetery will be available for review tonight during a public briefing by the Department of Veterans Affairs at Washington Crossing Historic Park.
State Rep. Darryl Metcalfe refused to apologize for the comments he made on the floor of the House on Wednesday, wherein he suggested that he was opposing recognizing a Muslim religious organization's convention because "Muslims do not recognize Jesus Christ as God." He claims his comments were taken out of context, but it's hard to see how. Governor Rendell's response took the form of an awesome put-down: "I don't think I have agreed with anything Rep. Metcalfe said in the last three or four years and that statement doesn't change anything.... I don't think many people take much of what Rep. Metcalfe says seriously."

A man has been arrested in connection with the attack on a woman in a City Avenue motel room last week, and it's 19-year-old Joseph Vignola Jr., whom local television stations are reporting is the son of Joseph C. Vignola, a former city councilman and controller and well-known city political figure.
The Convention Center expansion project was halted on Christmas Eve when the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia obtained an injunction ordering wrecking crews to stop work. The preservationists want to save the two small but historic Broad Street buildings that workers were set to dismantle. Today they'll travel to Harrisburg to ask a Commonwealth Court judge to convert the temporary demolition ban into a permanent one.
Foreclosures were down in Pennsylvania and New Jersey in November, as compared to October 2007 and October 2006.
A 4-year-old in Southwest Philadelphia shot himself once in the throat about 4:50PM yesterday inside a rowhouse belonging to his family. He was pronounced dead forty minutes later at Children's Hospital. The weapon was a 9mm handgun, and there doesn't seem to be any information yet on how the child got his hands on it, or who it belongs to.
TV star Bam Margera of West Chester, along with business partner and bar owner Don Moore, plans "to open a theater, capped by an old-fashioned marquee, in an empty storefront in the business district. Construction is under way for a projected opening in the spring. The theater, so far unnamed, will book musical acts and stand-up comedians and will show films."
The union that represents faculty and coaches at the 14 state-owned universities in Pennsylvania has voted overwhelmingly to strike "if contract negotiations with the State System of Higher Education break down." Current contracts expire June 30, so the earliest strike date would be July 1. Here's hoping negotiations go well!

- Former CBS3 news anchor Larry Mendte was sentenced yesterday to six months of house confinement, along with three years of probation and a $5,000 fine for obsessively and illegally reading the e-mails of his former co-anchor, Alycia Lane. Lane also attended the sentencing.

The saga of CBS 3 anchorwoman Alycia Lane has gotten even stranger. The Daily News reports that her first call upon release from NYPD custody was to Governor Edward Rendell. A spokesman for the governor,Chuck Ardo, said to the paper that she did it to "make sure he knew her side of the story because he is an opinion-maker and runs around in influential circles." And "I think she knew better than to ask him to intervene." Ardo also made it clear that the governor's office was not going intervene in the case.

I like this Top (Insert Your Number) thing that Phillyist has going right now. It allows you to write without a clear beginning-to-end narrative, something that comes in handy when you aren’t really watching the game that you are supposed to be “reporting” on. This week, I didn't have something as deathly important as getting my dog's photo taken with Jolly St. Nick. No, I blew the game off because my wife was having her family over for dinner. Now I like the in-laws, but, more importantly, I really like TACOS. The wife made some really delicious ones and I wasn’t going to let some game with “playoff” implications get in the way of my “Should I have beef or pork tacos” dilemma. It just really wouldn’t be fair to the family. That and the fact that I've officially graduated to the "don't really give an ass" mode of this season. But since I’m not going to let the fact that I didn’t really watch the game get in the way of a deadline, let’s start the fun and cheeriness!

She has been divorced twice, appeared on Dr. Phil, was romantically linked to WCBS anchor Chris Wragge, and of course infamously sent bikini photos to a married man. All of this seemed to make her one of the darlings of the New York Post’s Page Six column of late.

We are dumbfounded as to why the New York Post’s Page Six gossip column has been following the saga of the love life of KYW’s Alycia Lane, but it has provided some odd entertainment since the spring. In case you don’t know, the tabloid broke the story of Lane sending e-mails containing bikini photos of herself to NFL Network anchor Rich Eisen which were intercepted by his wife, ABC Sports reporter Suzy Shuster.
