Pitchfork describes David Torn as a shapeshifter. All About Jazz says his new CD, Prezens, is not for the faint-at-heart. The Daily News reports that Torn describes his band as "what would happen if a non-two-chord rock jam band with at least three virtuosic players in it decided to marry itself to Future Sound of London." According to Ars Nova Workshop, "Influenced by Tony Williams' Lifetime, the original Mahavishnu Orchestra, and the electric Miles Davis bands, the textures of Prezens shift from unsettled ambiance to unsettling violence, with hovering calm at key intervals. The mood swings hint at Torn's self-described musical 'schizophrenia.'"

sure of when we first saw lead singer Rhett Miller perform solo. It was the 2003 Singer-Songwriter (now All About the Music) Festival, and we were blown away. He played many of our favorite Old 97's songs, and a lot of songs we'd never heard before. In short, we were hooked. And lucky us, Rhett Miller will be back in Philly tonight at the World Cafe Live! And luckier you, tickets still seem to be available.

Update: Fixed a few typos and small factual errors, and added a more correct image credit. Thanks, Maria!

We told you it was coming back in July; later, we warned you when voting had begun. And today, finally, local radio station WXPN's list of the 885 All Time Greatest Artists has been compiled and locked in, and the playback has begun. Today and tomorrow XPN will still be running their Fall Fund Drive, which means they're pretty agonizing to listen to live, but you can keep up with what's going on countdown-wise on XponentialMusic.org, or on the All About the Music Blog.

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

  • It's a sad day for Philadelphians. Harry Olivieri, who co-founded Pat's King of Steaks and is generally credited with having co-invented the cheese steak itself, died on Thursday of heart failure. He was 90. The "Pat" of Pat's King of Steaks was Harry's older brother; it's Frank, Harry's son, who runs the restaurant now.
  • If you listen to WXPN, you already know all about this, but there's another festival coming to the area next weekend: XPN's All About the Music Festival. The title would seem to indicate that this is a festival that's not about high-priced snacks and memorabilia, or drugs and spirituality. It's just about music, and we like the sound of that. Of course, just because it's all about the music doesn't mean it can't also be for the whole family; it opens Friday night with two stages of performers, but Saturday and Sunday there will be a third Kids Corner Stage featuring tunes for the children. And if the kids get bored of just sitting around, there's always the nearby Camden Children's Garden to occupy them - the folks from XPN will apparently be taking it over.

  • McNabb had his first press conference of the Eagles' first minicamp on Saturday, and it sounds like the topics he'll be grilled on this year are the same as last year: whether he's "lost the locker room," whether he can get it back, controversial statements about race, and, of course, T.O., T.O., T.O. Sigh. And here we thought we were finally done with that jackass...
  • The answer, of course, is applause. This week's quote comes from the musical . In this scene, a group of gypsies relate how difficult their lives are, but say the payoff is in the applause. We're sure the actors in the productions below would agree. Now, on with the listings!
