The Holiday season is in full swing in NYC, with holiday lights in Brooklyn, a giant snow globe in Bryan Park and Chanukah specials for ham. One citizen decided to go vigilante on annoying car alarms, a murder suspect used a fake Asian accent on the stand and a video of a man being beaten up by teenage girls on a subway shocked the city. And we interviewed soon-to-be-leaving-Gawker editor Choire Sicha, who said, "Wouldn't a kinder, gentler Gawker be hideously unreadable? No, we never talked about that. It would be hysterical but we haven't."

The "10,000 men: A Call to Action" campaign will get started in earnest on Saturday when they put the first 200 men on the streets. It'll be a field exercise for squad leaders, and apparently they'll also be doing a door-to-door campaign to alert neighbors of the effort. Then they'll be patrolling in South Philadelphia next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening. John Lewis, the suspect in the murder of police officer Chuck Cassidy, was...

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you. A handy list for frequenters of fast food restaurants like ourselves: The 88 Fast Food Items Most Likely To Kill You. We're pleased to say that most of these are from places we don't ever go to. But we're depressed to see McDonalds' fries and Burger King's chicken fries included. We love those! (Via Sarah) And speaking of unhealthy foods, how about some...

We here at Phillyist have been thinking long and hard about resurrecting the Frugal Fun Alert. For one, many of us used it regularly to plan our outings, especially on weeknights, and we’re basically self-serving creatures. For another, we’ve gotten lots of feedback from readers that they miss it and want it back. And, frankly, it was an awesome post containing info we should provide. But it’s a post that requires a lot of attention, and as we spent time building up our staff page the last few months it fell to the wayside. And, without getting too psychological, we perhaps were hesitant to take on a regular post that had been handled, incredibly well, by Star Foster.

We're a little narcissistic. We have a Google News Alert set up to tell us anytime anyone mentions Phillyist on the internets. Usually, it's just a fleeting reference (like a "fleeting expletive," we suppose) to us on someone else's blog – quite often another -Ist blog.

At 12:30 this afternoon, the organization Moms Against Guns will bring its message to the masses from a stage in Love Park. Lynne Korman Honickman, local philanthropist and founder of the organization, was told she'd be "spinning her wheels" if she tried to galvanize women across the state to express their outrage over our appalling rate of gun violence, particularly that against children. This afternoon's rally is the organization's official kick-off; there is already a petition online you can sign if you can't make it downtown for lunch. Monica Yant Kinney's Inquirer column today was devoted to Honickman and her movement; colleague Jane Golden said of her: "She really believes one person can make a difference." Amen to that. Spin on, grandmom, spin on.

Warning: Possible spoiler alert.

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King, and appreciated their beautiful skyline.

  • University of Pennsylvania sophomore "Anne Ryan, 19, was hospitalized Saturday afternoon in critical condition, and died early yesterday morning" of meningococcal meningitis. Penn has therefore issued a health alert for those who were in close contact with her.
  • With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to.

  • The PA budget got held up a bit yesterday by some further discussion, especially about the Senate plan to fund hazardous-sites cleanup by taking $40 million from a land preservation fund. Lawmakers have made the wise decision to not decide on the most contentious bits until later, so the budget did indeed get through both Houses yesterday and will be signed by Rendell later today... hopefully, anyway.
  • this Saturday at 10 PM. Tickets are on sale now, so get your fishnets and your best bustier ready to do the time warp. Again.

If you, like Phillyist, depend on XPN's live stream to entertain you during the long work day, you're in for what might be a sign of things to come today. XPN, along with other radio stations that simulcast their broadcasts and many webcasters, is participating in the Internet Radio Day of Silence. Why would they do such a thing? Do they want to torture us? No. But the Copyright Royalty Board does. A recent ruling mandating rate increase along with retroactive royalty payments to July 2006 will lead to a virtual shutdown of online streams. Why? The rate increase will simply price most noncommercial and independent webcasters out of the market; XPN has said that they simply won't be able to offer unfettered access to their streams, as the new rates will cost them over $100,000 annually. The bite in the ass is that many independent artists are none too pleased with the decision, considering the independent and niche nature of many webcasts (find a terrestrial radio station that offers the playlist of the Polka Jammer Network. We dare you) helps them gain needed exposure.

  • Philadelphia corrections officer Christopher Davidson has been arrested after going on a crazy rampage on an ATV in East Germantown on Tuesday evening. He drove all over a playing field, as well as nearby sidewalks and streets, nearly crashing into numerous vehicles and nearly running over numerous people. The ATV finally stopped after slamming into a police wagon and flipping several times, but that wasn't the end of the chase; police had to continue chasing Davidson on foot before finally wrestling a handgun away from him and taking him into custody. The article doesn't mention it, but... we're betting he was on something.
  • Lucky for you, rockers, Sea Wolf is making a stop in the Illadelph-I-A. Don’t confuse this Sea Wolf with the Jack London novel. Believe me. The call of the wild (Pun alert! Pun alert!) Sea Wolf will be pouring out of the Trocadero on Monday evening. Alex Church, the multi-instrumentalist solely responsible for Sea Wolf, is going to bang your head like a gong and satiate your need for some silver sun (the Pickup variety).

This suburban Phillyist was felled by the twin terrors of a flooded basement and strep throat (no, really. We're loving March so far) Friday night, and couldn't venture into the city to catch Local Boy Making Good Matt Duke's show at the World Café Live. Fortunately for us, Sister of Phillyist is both a Drexel student and a total Matt Duke fangirl, so she agreed to cover the show for us. What follows is her guest review of last night's show.

Phillyist paid tribute to her this week with a heartfelt letter to her and an obituary.

Update: A few more sites have been added, and a few other fixes have been made.

Somehow, the world of -ists managed to make it through the week despite news that Jen & Vince broke up.

  • In the sort of news we hate to read, but feel compelled to pass along: a stray bullet struck a woman in North Philly yesterday morning, leaving her in critical condition; and a man was stabbed in West Philadelphia. But really, let's spend more time arguing about that statue.
