The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you. The Golden Globes have been sort of cancelled! They'll still be announcing the winners in an hour-long press conference on NBC, but no stars will be there and there won't be any parties or celebrations. It's all due to the writers' strike, of course. Speaking of the writers' strike, more and more of the independent studios are making......

In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and......

What's new and/or interesting at Philly theaters this weekend. Control - A biopic about Ian Curtis, the frontman of Joy Division, who hanged himself at a young age on the eve of the band's first U.S. tour. The film is based on a book by Curtis' wife Deborah. Newcomer Sam Riley stars as Curtis opposite Samantha Morton. Obviously it doesn't have a particularly happy ending, but the reviews are generally quite good, and it's a......

Today has been declared Phillies Day by Mayor Street, and the Inquirer has some Phillies fashion advice for you. 250 artists, prison officials and criminologists are coming together for the first-ever Arts in Criminal Justice National Conference, which is being held today through Friday at the Sheraton Center City hotel. The Philadelphia police officer who took a shotgun blast to the face last week left the hospital yesterday and says he's doing great, and......

In the interest of full disclosure, we have to tell you that this particular Phillyist grew up in the Boston area, so this review hurts us more than you know. We...really thought that Flogging Molly did an awesome job. If we paid any attention to our mother's advice about not saying anything if there's nothing nice to say...we would probably never say anything about a show at Festival Pier ever again, much less a punk......

Remember your first job? Was it cutting lawns around the neighborhood, or doing an internship at a non-profit? Phillyist admits to doing time at the local Aeropostale, which is funny considering our complete lack of "fashion sense." Whatever job it was, you no doubt remember as we do that those initial forays into the working week weren’t always smooth sailing. Although most of us have probably gotten used to the job seeking circuit by now,......

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you. This is a pretty neat find: a series of illustrations from a 1947 issue of Life Magazine wherein some cartoonists were asked to draw their most famous characters, once normally, and then again with a blindfold on. The results are fascinating. (Via) To celebrate the impending release of The Simpsons Movie, Shiny Shiny dug up a link to Great Gadgets of the Simpsons,......

When I first saw that SEPTA was conducting a campaign to cut down cell phone conversation on their trains, I have to say I was skeptical. No amount of pandering, I thought, would stop passengers from making incredibly urgent calls to talk about the prior night’s debauchery or the conflict at work that only a complete narcissist could spend more than five seconds thinking about. But, alas, I have to say the signs with the......

I'm meeting my boyfriend's parents on Friday. It wasn't supposed to happen this soon. I mean, we've only been a couple for a month. But he's graduating from law school, and his family knows I exist. So there's the expectation that I'll be there, in the role of doting new girlfriend. (I don't really dote, but that's beside the point.) Since receiving, and then accepting, my invitation to post-graduation dinner, I've been collecting unsolicited advice......

Some people have a "Things to do Before I Die" list. I don't necessarily have a "list," but since I am obsessive about having lists, I do have some idea what I would put on that list. I can honestly say that I can officially check "Have a famous talented musician play a private performance for me" off my list. While I am a bit upset no one took my advice to see Abra Moore......

A Quirky Column about Dog Walking Adventures in the City of Dog-Owning Love Dancing Dogs?! Forget about all the hoopla surrounding Dancing with the Stars, according to PetPlace.com, dog lovers are signing up to learn how to dance with their dogs. Sound crazy? Not to a bunch of folks who want to participate in a sport called Canine Freestyle—an activity in which dog and owner move in tandem through a set of choreographed steps to......

From 1988 to 1994, Sassy Magazine offered a generation of teenage girls entertainment news, love and life advice, and a feminist perspective. Though its publication ended well over ten years ago, many of its readers remain devout fans - to the extent that two of them, Kara Jesella and Marisa Meltzer, have released the book How Sassy Changed My Life. The book is tells the story of Sassy's history through interviews with writers and staff......

The times they are a changing. A quick sweep of the web now brings back incredible results. Check out these barnacles we found floating around: - We feel like you are less likely to be caught with a prostitute. Pulling a B&E on a prison seems extreme. Just pay for it already, screw jail time. - Of course this happened in Pennsylvania. We have some advice for you, pal. Keep drinking. What else are you......

Film: Once, S&Man Future Screenings: Once: No future screenings scheduled, but after two sold-out screenings, look for it in Festival Favorites! S&Man: No future screenings scheduled Once I only planned to see Once because it stars Glen Hansard of Irish band The Frames, and I'm reviewing their upcoming show (more on that in a few weeks). Films: Exiled, Sisters Future Screenings: Exiled, April 8 (today), Ritz Five at 2:30PM Sisters, April 10, Prince Music Theater at 9:30PM Yesterday was only my second day at the festival, and already I think I'm losing it! I got to my first screening a full 40 minutes early because I had somehow become convinced that it was at 7PM and not 7:30PM. Then I stood in the wrong line for about 10 minutes. I also,......

Movie: Invisible Waves Future Screening: Sunday, April 8, 7:30 PM, Ritz East 1 I see a fair number of pretentious, art-house movies at the festival every year (see, for example, Invisible Waves), and I’m continually amused by the variety of euphemisms that festival programmers and blurb-writers employ when they essentially mean either “slow,” “boring,” or both. However, I assume that some of you may be festival neophytes who, for whatever reason, are not exactly sitting......

Last Saturday, a couple Phillyists and I hit up the 90s Party upstairs at Sal's on 12th. When I enter a bar to the theme song from Clarissa Explains It All, I know I'm going to have fun. I'm intuitive, what can I say? Similarly, when I approach an employees' bathroom and it takes concerted effort to open the door without ripping it in half, I feel justified assuming I'm in trouble. Now, to be......

High up on my list of unforgivable sins? Poorly-attended performances of great plays and bands. (I think that may be because I want the rest of the world to have my taste in the arts realm. Maybe I'd actually turn the radio on once in a while...) Unfortunately, Gran Bel Fisher's show at the World Cafe Live last night didn't break any attendance records—and his opening act, Lelia Broussard, was performing to an almost-empty house.......

Way back when, I covered gym equipment use etiquette in a "Return to Sender" column (this was long before the advent of Monday Manners). But the equipment floor isn't the only place to be concerned about your comportment at the gym. Au contraire. You also have to mind your manners in the locker room. Nudity is a tricky issue. Some people are simply more comfortable with it than others. But, comfort or not, it's pretty......

Last night, I was reminded again of how damned short I am when I ended up right in the middle of the tallest crowd I've ever seen at First Unitarian Church, where I was to see William Elliott Whitmore, and, to a lesser extent, Red Sparowes. "See" is generous. I heard fine, but mostly, what I saw was a lot of people's backs. And the top of Whitmore's jaunty hat. But that's okay. I've kind......

On my walk to work Tuesday morning, I was a block away from the store when I hit a red light. While waiting for it to change, I looked to see what the light was doing. There was a man standing to my left, in my line of vision to the stoplight. He winked and smiled at me, but I couldn’t even tell you what he looked like, because as soon as my nose......

Sunday. Usually, a quiet, contemplative day in the Blogosphere. But not here in the Ist-a-Verse. Nonono! Just look below and see all of the wild and crazy stuff our staffs are up to. In Austin, bands are beginning to confirm for SXSW and the rumor mill is up and running. Good thing, too, because we all know how much Austinites love live performances. Austin also found itself in the national spotlight, with Longhorn Legend......

NBC 10 managed to get an exclusive interview on Wednesday with Milton Street, the brother of Philadelphia mayor John Street. Milton Street was recently indicted with federal tax and fraud charges and this was his first interview with the media. The interview was handled by anchor Tim Lake. Street was cagey and evasive as he was denying the charges against him while Lake seemed a bit out of his league. Some highlights: Lake: You had......

Before you read this review, go read the plot summary for Valhalla. I’ll wait. Done? Good. Confused? Yeah, I figured you would be. I certainly was, too. But because I loved the last Philadelphia Theatre Workshop play I saw, and because as a child I was fascinated by King Ludwig II of Bavaria (and particularly enamored of Neuschwanstein, the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland), and because, hell, I’m from Texas, I couldn’t......

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week. Off the Leash (Mon; 8PM-8:30PM; Lifetime) - Lifetime belatedly jumps on the reality show bandwagon (well, we're reasonably sure they didn't have one already - give us a break, it's not like we sit around watching Lifetime, for God's sake) with this new series following the trials and tribulations of a fledgling canine talent agency in Hollywood called Le Paws, focusing in particular on seven dogs and......

Performances: P's & Q's (Lee Etzold and MyKindaPony) (Future performances); Eye-95 re-tarred (BRAT Productions) (Future performances). I took a two-day breather that wasn't really a breather at all, after my nine-in-three weekend, and jumped right back on the saddle with two shows yesterday, two today, two tomorrow, two Saturday, and (maybe) two Sunday.
