  • It's been awhile since we've had a Teachers Gone Wild story; but rest assured, they're still out there. Our latest TGW is now-former Council Rock High School teacher Robert Hawkins, who allegedly had a five-month sexual relationship with a seventeen-year-old student. (Hawkins is 43.)
  • But in case you didn't, the Daily News was on the scene, too.

August 11, 4:30PM – About twenty minutes ago, this Phillyist heard a loud crash in her Old City office and noticed a Philly Trolley Works trolley seemed to be stopped at an odd angle just past the southeast corner of Third and Market, near Pizzicato restaurant. We're not sure of the details, but it seems that the trolley hit a Ryder moving van near the Ben Franklin Post Office between Third and Fourth Streets, then turned across the intersection and slammed into a construction van at Market and South Bodine Streets. It's not clear if there were passengers on the bus at the time of the accident. Details are very sketchy at this time (mostly he-said, she-said), but the driver apparently suffered a heart attack or stroke. At least one person (the driver, most likely) was seen on a gurney, being loaded onto an ambulance. We'll post more details as we get them.

  • Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will be in Philadelphia today for a private meeting at a Center City law firm to say thank you to some of her major supporters.
  • Barack Obama's wife, Michelle Obama, was apparently well received when she spoke at a rally at Haverford College yesterday. A new Daily News/Franklin & Marshall poll has Clinton still in the lead with 46% support among likely Democratic voters, but Obama is closing in behind with 40% (14% are still undecided). As we mentioned yesterday, the candidates will be holding a debate tonight at the National Constitution Center, and the Daily News expects the sparks to fly. Oh, and don't forget those traffic restrictions.
  • The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Building at 16th and Callowhill Streets was evacuated yesterday morning when a white, powdery substance was found in a third-floor office. The substance turned out to be foot powder. D'oh. (Via Sarah)
  • Also announced yesterday were the Franklin Institute awards; the Inquirer has a profile of one of the honorees. (Btw, did you see that the Franklin Institute is just calling itself "The Franklin" now? What's up with that?)
  • Insiders say Barack Obama is the favorite to win the endorsement of the Philadelphia Building Trades Council, which would represent a striking break with Governor Rendell and Mayor Nutter, who are supporting Hillary Clinton. The trades council, which includes 37 locals of building and construction trade unions, was scheduled to meet this morning in Northeast Philadelphia to decide the issue.
  • A 17-year-old male knocked on the door of the security booth inside the lobby of the Queen Lane Apartments late Sunday. When the cop inside opened it, the young man fired one shot with an assault rifle, striking the officer in the left hip underneath his bullet-proof vest. Luckily the officer was able to immediately slam shut the door of the bullet-proof booth before the gunman fired twice more. The youth then ran off and Zahir Boddy-Johnson was arrested an hour later for the crime, and will be charged as an adult with attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, firearms violations and related offenses. The officer is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
