We would be terrible, awful, no good Phillies Phans (see what we did there?) if we didn't take the opportunity to congratulate Chase Utley, Cole Hamels and Aaron Rowand on their selection to the 2007 All-Star Game. We'll be honest - we were expecting that Utley would be elected starting second baseman, and we were fairly certain King Cole would make the cut on the mound. We were, however, pleasantly surprised to see Rowand make the team as a reserve. We've enjoyed watching Rowand's brand of gritty play since he was on the White Sox, and are particularly pleased that the rest of baseball appears to be taking notice.

Since spring training, it’s been the same story for the Phillies – they hit the snot out of the ball, but have huge question marks in the bullpen. Flash forward half a season and the same problem still exists. They're an average team that makes three-run leads in the seventh inning nerve-wracking. In the latest episode of late-inning drama, Geoff Geary has been so bad lately he's shaved his goatee and cut his hair in hopes that he'll get out of his recent funk.

To clear up any speculation of bias, we at Phillyist absolutely love the Phillies. Pat Burrell? Not so much.

Ugh. Milton Street is more of a fiasco than a real candidate, something of a sideshow in the political circus. He may even sideline Brady's chances! Oh the shame!

Rainy Sundays aren't usually good for much. The malls and movie theaters are jammed, the parks in Center City are, shall we say, outdoors, and you can't play baseball.

After two excruciating losses, the Phillies beat the Mets this afternoon at Shea Stadium, 5-3, to avoid the series sweep and come back home for the weekend on a high note. The Fightins' got on the board early thanks to first inning homers from Bobby Abreu and Ryan Howard, but similar to the last two games, gave up the lead in the next inning, and the game was tied at 3-3 until the seventh.

They’re up, they’re down, they’re all around. The Phillies halted a five-game losing streak and a possible sweep by the Boston Red Sox, on Sunday afternoon. But they blew it in an up and down, 16-inning marathon 9-8 loss last night to the New York Mets. Ryan Madson might as well have been the starter – he came into the game in the ninth inning and pitched seven innings of relief, his longest outing as a major league pitcher. He was near perfect until his last pitch, which turned into a Carlos Beltran home run that gave the Mets the win.

This, readers, is the human equivalent of ROYGBIV, though you’ve got to admire that Aaron Rowand took the time to perfectly product his hair in the face of, well, that face.

Time to give another ballplayer the title of “Fighting Phil.” Centerfielder Aaron Rowand made a bang up catch in last night’s Phillies game – literally. He bashed his face into the center field railing, saving what could have been a triple in last night’s 2-0 win over the New York Mets.

Aaron Rowand made a big stamp on his first year in Philadelphia last night with a two-run home run in the eighth inning to keep the Phillies winning streak going with a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves.
