Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings almost burned down the TLA Friday night with one of the hottest shows I've seen there all year.

There is a new Queen of Soul. Sorry Mary, Alicia, and Jill, but there is a woman from Brooklyn who's reminding us all of how it's done. Her name is Sharon Jones, and she and her backing band, the Dap-Kings, will slay your ears and make you yearn for a time when people sang (and didn't sample), "Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene with a gangsta lean."

6. Pony, Celebration. Video here. Katrina Ford's crazy breathless stacatto chirping "I just want to be with you" over a sick bassline kicks this party into overdrive. Or maybe I just have a thing for anti-hero type female lead singers. Either way. It works.

Why? Because tonight we're going to Karaoke Obscura, a DIY karaoke event that happens the first Thursday of every month at 12 Steps Down (831 Christian St.). This isn't the run of the mill frat-tastic karaoke. It's indie style, with all of the songs you love but are never available. Check out the song list. A little TV on the Radio, a lot of the Smiths, some Pixies, and anything else you can think of. Personally, we are planning to get our friend hammered and make her sing "Decatur" in her best Sufjan.
