Girl Talk and Dan Deacon Tonight on September 17, 2007

Still riding the good vibes of their 2006 releases, Girl Talk and Dan Deacon come to town this evening for an R5 show at Club Polaris (AKA the Starlight Ballroom). Girl Talk -- stage name for Pittsburgh's Greg Gillis -- released, in this writer's opinion, the best album of 2006. Night Ripper took the mash-up to another level. Instead of pitting one song against another, Gillis' remixes replaced traditional musical notes with sample upon sample.... [continue]

T-Shirts, Get Yer T-Shirts! on February 2, 2006

Yes, folks, a lot of you have asked, and now I can finally answer. Phillyist t-shirts are now available for purchase. That link will lead you to our new shop, which includes logos from all of the Gothamist Web sites. If for some reason you're a Philadelphia resident with a love of Austin, for instance, you can pick up an Austinist t-shirt. And design it yourself. So, go forth and order, children.... [continue]

While we try to get over the fact that the South St. bridge is so crappy it was damaged by rain, here's your roundup of what's going on in the Philly blogosphere: -- Dan Rubin introduces us to a new blog at Blinq. Admittedly, we were originally going to skim over the post, but then we saw the word "BEEFED" and knew that we had to post it. -- So apparently New Jersey cops aren't... [continue]

After a disappointing 101-90 loss to the New Jersey Nets last night, the general print/radio media opinion seems to be, "Hmm, the Sixers kind of suck." And hey, we agree, but way to be a few months late, fellas. After all, didn't the Sixers ink Kyle Korver to a multi-year deal this offseason? We sort of knew then. And of course this all makes us feel much worse for Mo Cheeks. Don't you sort of... [continue]

We forget who called Kyle Korver the Ashton Kutcher of the Sixers (and the NBA, really), but we sort of agree, even though the comparison doesn't make sense when you think about. Sure, they kind of have shaggy hair, but Ringo Starr did too. Early on, anyways. But hey, let's forget about that and start talking about why we'd actually post about the Sixers D-less small forward. Why? Well, he's holding a coat drive at... [continue]

We're not generally the types to walk up to someone and say, "Hey, how 'bout this weather?" but, um, "Hey, how 'bout this weather?" The rain and wind helped to bring down some trees overnight, which certainly hurt the morning commute. We don't think any cars were actually hit with trees while driving, but downed powerlines and trees made for tricky navigating in certain neighborhoods, while certain SEPTA lines were delayed (or in the case... Oh, how the mighty (and fat) have fallen. Men's Fitness has ranked Philadelphia #23 in the "Fattest City" rankings, a plummet from our great spot at #2. Yes, Philadelphia, we have managed to get thin while fatties like Chicago and Los Angeles have gorged themselves on those imposter "Philly Cheesesteaks" and climbed up the charts. Chicago now ranks as the Fattest City in America, while Baltimore ranks as the thinnest. Before you Baltimorians start celebrating,... [continue]

We're very proud to welcome a new Web site to the Gothamist network: Houstonist! Woo woo! Sure, their baseball team helped eliminate ours from the playoff race. But hey, at least we stuck them Brandon Duckworth a few years ago. Ha! Check out our Houston brothers and sisters today to get your fill of Cats. If you're too good for Cats, well, check out Basquiat, you elitist you.... [continue]

by Jen A. Miller Marc Broussard is a young man with a deep voice, and he's bringing it to the TLA on Friday, December 2. Broussard (http://www.islandrecords.com/marcbroussard/site/home.las), who calls himself a "white boy singing soul music," brings a mix of influences to his music, from Stevie Wonder to Johnny Allen, and it shows. He's a Louisiana boy, and to help out his fellow southerners impacted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, put out Bootleg to Benefit... [continue]

By Jen A. Miller It was the show that didn't almost happen, which would have been a damn shame because the combined lineup of Bruce Torres/The Smyths/The Silence/The Adam Monaco Band put on such a great show at World Cafe Live on November 30 that it lasted five hours and was quality the whole way through. The place had sound problems, and doors didn't open until fifteen minutes before The Smyths, the sister-duo first up,... [continue]

Phillies Sign Flash Gordon on December 2, 2005

The Phillies have signed Yankees set-up man Tom Gordon to a 3-year contract worth $18 million. The move will become official if/when Gordon passes a physical, reportedly scheduled for Saturday. The 38-year-old reliever will replace new Met Billy Wagner as the team's closer. Wagner recently signed with the Mets for $43 million over 4 years. Gordon was a success in New York setting things up for Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, but some are concerned about... [continue]

Freak Out, It's Harry Potter on November 17, 2005

Break out your round, thick-rimmed glasses: it's time for another round of Harry Potter mania. The fourth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's popular novel series - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - is due out this weekend in theaters nationwide. If you're one of the maniacs who plans on fighting crowds and children this weekend to get into a sold-out theater, you may want to consider being an all-out maniac and attending one... [continue]

Behold, everyone: a new blog has been found. Well, OK, a new-ish blog. Seth has been blogging about the local dining scene since September at his Philadelphia Restaurants blog. He seems to have stolen our LOVE rating system, although at least he didn't steal the image. Instead, he writes out "Philly Love Statues" and makes us feel much, much cooler in the process. Meanwhile, we can't blog about food blogging without directing a blog shoutout... [continue]

It's not every day that we get contacted by the Pennsylvania Tourism Office, so when we do, our ears perk up. Sort of like when you dangle a leash in front of a dog, except in this case it's more like dangling a possible blog post in front of a blogger. (We probably just killed that comparison, didn't we?) Today, though, we were pointed to "Fal Is Bigger Here," a new Web site from the... [continue]

The Cira Centre - that impressive looking building across the street from 30th Street Station - held its grand opening on Monday night. We're not exactly sure what they did, but since the building was lit up blue and green, we can only assume they were watching the Eagles do everything in their power to lose to the Cowboys on Monday night. Fortunately, no jumps were reported after the game. That probably would have been... [continue]

Earlier today we told you that Donovan McNabb would likely miss this Sunday's game against the Giants. Now, however, we can definitely tell you that McNabb is out. He will be replaced by Mike McMahon, the QB everyone thought was the Eagles third-stringer. McMahon replaced McNabb for the final drive of Monday night's loss to the Cowboys. McMahon has had a spotty career, mostly defined by his weird face and eyebrows more than any great... [continue]

When the Sixers started their year with a dismal 0 - 3 record, we promised ourselves that we wouldn't get too down on them. After all, they lost only 3 games in their long, arduous 82-game schedule. Now that the tables have turned, we have to promise ourselves that we won't get too excited about this Sixers team, which won their fifth straight game tonight against the winless Toronto Raptors, 104 - 92. The Sixers... [continue]

Andy Reid said he wouldn't bet on Donovan McNabb being ready for Sunday's game against the New York Giants. Andy, though, is Mormon, so I don't think he'd be betting on anything. Unfortunately, none of the reporters at Tuesday's press conference raised that crucial point. What this all means, though, is the Eagles fans who actually bother tuning in to Sunday's game will see Mike McMahon or Koy Detmer behind center. Reid wouldn't name a... [continue]

We had hope, but that hope is gone. With four minutes left, the Eagles were beating the Cowboys 20 - 7. They lost the game, 21 - 20. A soft prevent defense allowed the Cowboys to drive the field in a minute and close the gap. The Eagles needed to run out the clock with a couple of first downs via the run, but after one run for 3 yards, the Eagles chose to pass.... [continue]
