In April we invited all of our readers to submit their photos for the first Phillyist Framed photography contest and show. The event opens tomorrow night at Studio 34, and after months of preparation, we're down to the final details. We hope that all of our readers can make it out to celebrate with us and view the amazing work of these local photographers. And hey, Phillyist turns three this weekend—so it's all the... [continue]
Think you have what it takes to be a renowned photographer? Always wanted to display your photos, but never had a place to do it? Maybe you're not quite that ambitious, but you've got one killer shot that you're sure could stand with the best of them? We at Phillyist have been impressed with your Photoist entries, so we want to give you a chance to display your photography in a more formal gallery... [continue]
Let's just say, heading into Sunday night's Mae concert at the Fillmore at the TLA, we didn't have the highest expectations. Former Phillyist and current SFist writer Spencer commented that he was less than impressed with Mae the couple times he'd seen him. Plus, we went to the show straight from doing our Barking Beauty Liveblog, and really, how could anything be better than that, right? On the plus side, one of our favorite... [continue]
Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2008 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know! Quite a few of my favorite concert memories came from festivals that weren't in Philly—Austin City Limits and Virgin Fest—but next year, it looks like we might have our own sick festival to... Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar. Penn is having a holiday toy drive this year, and, as reader Jen writes: More proofreading fun, this time from the intersection of 36th and Walnut in front of the... [continue]

If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know! 10. Jumper - Yeah, I know it stars the whiny Darth Vader, but it's also got Sam "Motherfucking" Jackson, and a screenplay co-written by David Goyer about a war between teleporters and those... [continue]
Wow... Ever wondered what it would be like to have a Lewis Black impersonator delivering your news? The more you know......... [continue]
Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2008 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know! Twelve months and ten epochal collapses later, we're nearing 2008 and a fresh calendar year for career (or structural) decimation. Let's count 'em down from 10: 10. Pete Doherty (again) 2007 hasn’t been...... [continue]
Although The Golden Compass is being compared to the Narnia Chronicles in some of the ads, the series that the book it's based on is a part of - Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy - is really the anti-Narnia: equal but exactly opposite to C.S. Lewis' saga of Christian allegory. Some people are saying that The Golden Compass is anti-Catholic - and they're right. The movie doesn't emphasize it as much as the book...... [continue]
You wouldn't know it from looking at me, or from looking at Ross, but this Phillyist has always had a thing for bad boys. Somewhere near the top of my list of dirty, sexy, hunky sits Anthony Bourdain. Sure, he's got a history of substance abuse, smokes like a chimney, is far too fond of fried foods, and, oh yeah, is old enough to be my father. But I'd run off on a culinary adventure...... (This movie has already been out for over a week, obviously. However, when I saw it last Friday I felt compelled to write about it—it's been a long time since I saw a movie that stayed with me for this long. If you haven't had a chance to see it yet, by all means do so ASAP.) It must be something in the water. Filmmakers have rediscovered the mythology of the American frontier, and that...... [continue]
Go across the Walt Whitman Bridge and take the North-South Freeway to Route 55. Travel South on Route 55 for about 25 miles, and you'll find yourself in Vineland, New Jersey. (Insert wisecrack about Vineland's awesomely bad municipal website here.) Why would you go to Vineland? Well, at the moment, you probably wouldn't. But next summer, you might have a reason to. Paste Magazine is reporting that C3 Presents—the force behind Lollapalooza and the...... [continue]
If you’re Travis, making an entrance through the front of the Electric Factory and weaving your way through an audience is an easy way to stir up some excitement. Simultaneously playing “Gonna Fly Now,” (The “Rocky” Theme) by Bill Conti makes for an even better introduction. Jump up and down on stage with your fists in the air, and you’ve got your Philly fans pulling for you to be good. Show that you’ve got...... [continue]
