Let's see if we can keep this straight. John Nolan left Taking Back Sunday to form Straylight Run (MySpace), for which he eventually recruited drummer Will Noon after the band Noon was in, Breaking Pangea, split up. The lead singer of Breaking Pangea had been Coatesville native Fred Mascherino, who then went on to replace Nolan in Taking Back Sunday. While still in Breaking Pangea, Mascherino began work on his own project, The Color Fred...... [continue]

Ok, so we arrived at the Electric Factory around 8pm and by 8:30, Thrice had gone on. We don't know what happened to mewithoutyou, but either they went on before the doors opened or they cancelled. No matter. We've seen them before and they're unique take on song structure, frantically spoken lyrics and visceral stage performance are worth catching, but they won't get your knees buckling or anything. Thrice, on the other hand, opened with...... [continue]

The holidays kind of snuck up on us this year. Perhaps because Thanksgiving was so early. After Turkey Day was over, it was still too early to get into the Christmannakkanzaa spirit. (This Phillyist adheres to a strict "No Christmas music before December 1" rule.) And then we got caught up with other things, and we didn't really notice that, yep, we're in holiday season. It took Thursday night's WXPN Musicians On Call benefit concert...... [continue]

From intelligent indie to choral classics and all the way back to the cranium-crushing aural assault of metal, there is no pigeonholing Phillyist's sonic loyalties. Which is why we were excited to review the newest release from California-based [insert generic irrelevant genre label here] quartet Thrice. The two-disc release is more a bundling of two EPs than a double album, but that's fine with...... [continue]

It's the holiday season, so many of us are in a charitable mood. Certainly, there are good feelings to be had from performing acts of selflessness, and we at Phillyist encourage you to donate your time, money, or a toy this holiday season.
