Phillyist's quick-picks for a rock your socks off start to the weekend.
[Author's Note: This is a fairly lengthy post, much longer than what we usually do here at Phillyist. Our apologies! But the Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival included many noteworthy events, and we felt it proper to give each its due.]

We got our own musical phenom making good. Sniff. We're so proud.
Adding to the list of Philadelphia dining establishments coming out with recession-busting prix fixe menus is Old City's part-kitschy, part-lovely Positano Coast, the Aldo Lamberti restaurant helmed by the restaurateur's son, Pippo. Their "3 for $33" holiday menu, offered Sunday through Thursday evenings through December 30, features some of the restaurant's most popular appetizers, entrees, and desserts—and I was able to sample some of the dishes last week.
The recent election made us wonder what we could do for our country, and PW's Holiday Guide has some suggestions on what you can do for your city, in the form of nine charities to consider helping out this holiday season, including the Philadelphia Student Union.
Last week, Lenny Campello wrote about Viva Chile in Philadelphia, nine days of Chilean art and culture in Philadelphia. Included in the event's line-up would be a special menu (PDF) at The Restaurant School in University City, and I was invited to the kick-off dinner, held last Friday.

On Thursday, November 13, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will make a proclamation naming November 13th to the 21st as "Viva Chile in Philadelphia!" week. He will be joined by Chilean Ambassador Mariano Fernandez who will honor Mayor Nutter with the Orden de Bernardo O'Higgins, Grado Comendador, Chile's highest commendation for non-Chilean citizens. The award, which is approved by the President of Chile, is the first such commendation from Chile that a Philadelphia Mayor has ever received.
You've heard of a glass ceiling, but what about a cork ceiling? Gender isn't just an issue in the corporate and political worlds: apparently, it's important in the wine world, too. And so to conclude their yearlong "Art of Remarkable Women Series," the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts will be presenting a panel discussion called “Breaking through the Cork Ceiling," featuring seven women who also happen to be movers and shakers in the wine industry. The event is free and open to the public but, sadly and perhaps a bit deceptively, wine will not be served. (You can get your drink on at PAFA's annual Bacchanal the following evening.)

Our lives as bad-asses sure pale in comparison to former Pagans chapter president John Hall.
This past Friday, Citibank hosted a wine tasting social for the members of the Independence Business Alliance Networking group at the bank’s midtown location. The wine tasting was conducted by The Wine School of Philadelphia. The IBA is the new Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Chamber of Commerce for the Greater Philadelphia region.

Do you like wine? Of course, we all do!
Weren't we just talking yesterday about our love for wine? Lucky us that Positano Coast is willing to indulge that love, along with our love of raw and only-barely-cooked fish, with tonight's Crudo Wine Dinner.
What's the only thing better than wine? Wine pairings going head-to-head, that's what!

What is it about First Fridays that makes the weather come? It really does seem like every fourth Friday, the weather turns to crap, just in time to descend on art-loving urban hipsters traveling from gallery to gallery to imbibe free wine. If we feel like trading the Film Festival for First Friday, here's where we'll be imbibing:

Here's hoping that on the next album and tour, she takes the Middle Way.
It's hard figuring out what to get for the people in your life who already have everything, and so you're usually stuck at the last minute, still trying to figure out what you're buying them after the rest of the shopping is done. And here you are, four days before Christmas, stuck for ideas.
