This week, I am sick of death—of good men dying of cancer, of the dimming of the stars. I don't care that I didn't personally know any of these people. I watched Charlie's Angels when I was home sick from school, and I tried over and over again to learn the Moonwalk without ever succeeding. I am deflated by these deaths.

Over at 52nd and Pine Streets lies Malcolm X Park. Malcolm X Park is yet another example of the community working together to create something they can share and enjoy. The park has an active "friends of" organization. The Friends group meets on the first Wednesday of the month, in the park during nice weather, and at a neighbor's home during the colder/rainier months. Annual dues are $5 for an individual or $10 for a household. Malcolm X Park also has a well-maintained blog, which details upcoming park events as well as the everyday problems occurring in the park such as short dumping and graffiti.
As we mentioned last month, Phillyists Jill and Ross welcomed some PAWS foster kitties into their home. We're pleased to report that the Phillyist Fosters are all now available for adoption!!! So with that, meet our three lovely bachelorettes.

A few months ago, we told you about City Supported Agriculture. One of the urban farms we mentioned that was offering CSA was Greensgrow Farms. Whether you join Greensgrow's CSA next year (this year's is full) or simply go to the market, this video should give you more than enough incentive to support Greensgrow and similar endeavors around the city.

Gothamist had its full of the controversial, from a scandalous Calvin Klein billboard (with threesome) to the killing of Canada geese, in the name of airline safety.
Though robbery hasn't been charming for a while (it has been a long time since "The Highwayman"), these two unknown gents seem determined to make it as awkwardly lame as possible. The police are currently searching for two young men on BMX bikes wielding Uzis who began a crime spree on Tuesday. BMX bikes and Uzis? Really? Is that necessary?
Your faithful Phillyist Proofreader caught this Florida-plated Hyundai on Germantown Avenue, just north of Girard, in that neighborhood nostalgically and perhaps misleadingly called "Olde Kensington."
We focus on moms a lot in this column. Classes, events, support, its all for mommies, and with good reason. Carrying around a watermelon inside of your body for those last two months of pregnancy is hard work and we deserve a little extra love, especially from Philadelphia-based blogs. However, Father's Day IS coming up, and Phillyist thought it might be time for us to spotlight some stuff for dads. So here it is, tons of stuff to do for Father's Day, all for the price of a horrible tie and weird looking mug your dad will say loves and then "take to the office" where it will never be heard from again.

If the Phanatic has realized he would like to live as a she, we can support that decision fully. But whatever gender the Phanatic identifies as, it's highly inappropriate to flash the crowd.

This week, we present another small park: Bardascino Park, at 10th and Carpenter Streets in Bella Vista. Bardascino was built on the site of the former Community Hospital in 1977. It was dedicated in 1978 and named for Guiseppe Bardascino, who formed the Philadelphia Brass Band in 1912. The park's condition deteriorated for some twenty years, until residents of the area took action. They began holding clean-ups and meeting with the Dept. of Recreation to map out the future of the park. A Friends of Bardascino Park organization was ultimately formed, giving the residents a voice in the park's future. Over the years, the Friends planted various plants, removed dead trees, repaired benches and raised funds through bake sales and bocce tournaments.

- Bostonist went to the Boston Pride Parade and saw everything from Batman and Robin to dancing lifeguards. Oh, and a local sports team swept its rival.
- Chicagoist was all about artifacts this week: the collection of Italian artifacts worthy of Indiana Jones a local man had stashed in his house and an old photo of Bulls Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose flashing an alleged gang sign.
- SFist reacted to the city enacting the toughest recycling and composting laws in the U.S.
This week we salute the rampant stupidity of 18 year old Donta Cradock and 20 year old Ivan Rodriguez, two young men who obviously got their guidebooks on how to be an asshole at an early age. No strangers to law enforcement, Cradock and Rodriguez's combined 13 prior arrests stretch back to the tender age of 12. Wednesday night this lousy duo decided it would be a grand plan to steal a motorcyle at gunpoint. That fantastically idiodic idea ultimately cost 4 people in Feltonville their lives.

When I wrote about Clark Park a few weeks ago, I offhandedly stated that in West Philly, the parks are bigger. I wrote that before having visited Cedar Park, a small community park situated on a triangle of land between Baltimore Avenue, Catharine Street, and 49th and 50th Streets. Cedar Park is on the tiny side, but that's okay. On the sunny Saturday I stopped by, children were playing on the playground, older men were arguing with each other about something in that way that makes it clear they're not mad, and other people lounged about, keeping on an eye on the kids. Vendors were set up along the Baltimore Avenue side of the park, selling jewelry and various sundry things. It is rumored that the Carrot Cake Man is there selling his cakes in the evenings.

Has anyone else noticed it is getting hot? And not just like, oh wow, its certainly summer kind of hot. More along the lines of HOLY CRAP! PACK UP OUR STUFF RIGHT NOW AND LETS MOVE TO THE 'BURBS AND LIVE UNDER A TREE! I was this close to buying a plastic baby pool, setting it up in the middle of my living room, strapping on my wife-beater and sitting in it until I saw the leaves turn color.

Why is it that during the season where we bare-all in our bikinis, tank tops, and shorts, it is also the time we want to eat greasy boardwalk food like fried oreos and funnel cake? And pizza and fries and jersey corn and tomatoes and strawberries and... ok, i'll stop. It's a tough life, but somebody's gotta do it. Check out the happenings—food and non-food related—down the shore this weekend:

It smells wonderful in the Azalea Garden. Located just behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the garden is chockablock with azalea bushes, rhododendrons, lilacs, different kinds of trees, and various other plants I can't identify. Azaleas are early and quick bloomers—they peak in May and by now, their blooms have, for the most part, faded away. However, the rest of the garden is still going strong, attracting many people for a picnic or a tour on a Segway. Thanks to the Segway tour that rolled through the garden last time I was relaxing there with a book, I learned that the tree I was sitting under was a "weeping willow on the top and a cherry tree on the bottom." Also thanks to the Segway tour, I had the strange feeling that I was about to battle robo-humans.
Annie Baum-Stein, a local West-Philadelphia resident, parent, and yoga instructor, will be holding a free Yoga for Youngsters class at the Free Library's Walnut St. West location, this Saturday, June 6th. Focusing on children ages three and up (along with their parents and care-givers), Annie will be teaching according to the curriculum at Yoga Child—the fantastic yoga studio on South Street where this Phillyist just happens to practice. Registration is required, so call 215-685-7671 to save a place for your child in this great class. We are also told that if this event goes well, Yoga for Youngsters will be come a regular series in the fall, so head on out and show your support for bending and stretching!

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when faced with entertaining a child in the city. It gets even more overwhelming when you're doing said entertaining on a budget, and even worse when you start to feel you're doing your child a disservice by just sitting around the house worrying about the expense. Truth be told, trying to take a class with a baby or even a toddler is a gamble. Is the baby going cry the whole way through? Will your two-year-old even LIKE playing the drums in music class or will she be more interested in hitting her own head with the drumstick? Will YOU like any of the other moms—'cause lets face it, at least half the reason we join any of these classes is to meet other moms and to have a conversation with someone who can use the potty without asking for wiping help. Who wants to pay a crazy amount of money only to find out that your baby hates whatever you signed up for, all the other moms are asshats, and there is never any parking?
Summer Love is in the air people. Have you had a Missed Connection yet? A week's worth of local hijinks, thanks to our friend Craig.

But as this lady and the passengers of Oceanic 815 would tell you, it's probably not a good idea to try to take a dip with a polar bear.
