I've Got a Baby and Ten Dollars... Now What?

I've recently done some crack investigation reporting and have discovered that the economy is in some sort of slump. I've also come to realization that babies are expensive, what with their clothes and diapers and "food." Babies are selfish too: never once has my baby offered to get a job or pick up after herself or do anything to break up the monotony in our day. Its all me, me, me, twenty-four/seven.

Yo, Philly Down the Shore

It feels nice to be writing this post again. That's because it means it's summer. Things are a little different this year. Check out the "News" section and the events organized by region to help make the most of your weekends—as we Philadelphians would say—"down the shore."

If you need to take a quick break from the bustle of Center City, Louis I. Kahn Memorial Park is for you. It's a small park, less than an acre in size, that takes up the Northwest corner of 11th and Pine Streets. Known as a "concrete park" because, well, there's no lawn, only paving, the park has a magnificent garden and fountain along its innermost edge. Trees dot the landscape, providing shade and making the park on a hot day a good ten degrees cooler than the sidewalk surrounding it. Benches and small tables (perfect for playing chess or eating lunch) are scattered throughout the park.

Don't Look at Us; We're Grilling

Because it's Memorial Day, Phillyist is taking a much-needed holiday today. Check us out tomorrow for all your favorite content!

DCist kept track of the ongoing same-sex marriage debate in the District, including a number of heated Democratic party meetings, plus, of course, intervention by members of Congress.

  • Asshole of the Week

To be clear, Pennsylvania has banned same-sex marriage. So far, the courts have not done anything to put us on track with Connecticut or Iowa. So it is in a grand act of bigotry that State Senator Eichelberger held a rally in Hollidaysburg to announce his proposed amendment to the state constitution to "define marriage."

    Parking

In West Philly, the parks are bigger. Or at least they seem to be. Take Clark Park, located between 43rd and 45th Streets and Baltimore and Woodland Avenues. It is big enough to be split into several “sub” parks: North Park, Center Park, South Park—big enough that Chester Avenue runs through the middle, and big enough that it actually covers nine acres of land.

    PAWS Cat of the Week

PAWS will be hosting a special information session and fundraiser tomorrow, May 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Cosi at 4th & Chestnut. The session will give you all the info you need to know about being a foster parent to a cat, dog, or litter of kittens. Fostering is the only option for many animals, especially as we head into the summer, so PAWS needs all the help it can get. And if you can't foster, don't worry; swing by Cosi tomorrow evening for a bite to eat anyway, as they'll be donating a percentage of their evening sales to PAWS!

    Parking

This week we're going to venture over to the oldest botanic garden in North America, Bartram's Gardens. Okay, you might say, that's not a park, it's a garden. But I'll argue that it is a park, in that it's property that is being preserved for the public to enjoy. For instance, the oldest gingko tree in North America resides in Bartram's Gardens, as do a large number of native plants. It's more a park in the National Park sense than in the city square sense.

  • Shanghaiist knocked-off that super pretentious piece on bike culture by the New York Times by showing its own counterfeit bike style.
  • Asshole of the Week

SEPTA: Not this week's asshole. This time the story is not about stranded passengers, or surly drivers, buses driving into people willy-nilly, missing your job interview, missing your optometrist's appointment, being trapped underground for an hour on the trolley for no reason and with no explanation, having your bus rerouted into nowhere, service going up in price or service ending. Not any of those things. This time, SEPTA, or at least a SEPTA driver, was the wronged party.

...but a roommate might not be one of them. We suspect this is only a slight exaggeration on someone's real experience.

    Parking

If you feel like taking a trip or if you live out in Southwest Philadelphia, then this week's park is for you. There was enough nice weather on Saturday that I was able to ride out to 71st Street and Buist Ave, almost to the city's edge, to visit Elmwood Park. It was my first time ever over in the Southwest part of the city, and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not a bad ride, and there are plenty of bike lanes on the streets out that way, just watch out for kids doing wheelies down the wrong lane. Yikes.

Now, if we could all simply hand our garbage and recycling to Mayor Nutter, rather than indelicately tossing it on the street, all our problems would be solved!

    Asshole of the Week

This week's dishonoree reminds this Phillyist of fictional tragedies from Shakespeare's Lavinia to the can full of dead women from The Wire. If our world and city were slightly less screwed up, then that's where these stories would safely remain—trapped on the page, stage, or screen—safe from our real lives. Instead, we get this guy.

    Green Scene: Rain Barrels

Now that our heat wave is only a memory and we’re back to Spring showers, let’s talk about rain barrels and why they are important to the health of our watershed.
