Phillyist reader Leanne caught this error at Trader Joe's a few weeks ago, and observed: "Looks like the spell checker went home early for the holiday!" We'd quote Scrooge's policies on holiday leave here, Leanne, but it's the wrong holiday.

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.

It's an Iron Chef kind of week for us at Phillyist. On Sunday night, we watched Jose Garces rightful place as the Next Iron Chef—something we think has been a long time coming, as we suspect the Iron Chef producers have had their eye on Garces since he took out Bobby Flay as a challenger on the show last year.

Now, we can give you the lowdown on Chew Man Chu, the new restaurant in Symphony House (next to Girasole, in the old Du Jour space) helmed by former Iron Chef America challenger Tyson Wong Ophaso. We're happy to report that even though Ophaso couldn't beat Iron Chef Morimoto on TV, he's putting out some solid Asian fare on South Broad. Chew Man Chu has a sleek, lounge-y look, but don't let that fool you into thinking there isn't some solid food being delivered by the kitchen.

We were especially taken with Chef Ophaso's oxtail dumpling dish—a deep bowl of four delicious, perfectly textured dumplings in a white wine and black vinegar sauce. The oxtail is mixed with crab meat and pork, and although the flavor of the oxtail falls a bit to the background, it's definitely one of the more solid dumpling dishes we've had in the city. Our companion tried out the scallion roti. Chew Man Chu's roti fluffier than what we'd been used to from other Southeast Asian breads, and it didn't deliver much flavor on its own; that's okay, though, because it provides a great means of consuming Ophaso's house-made soy and chili sauces. The soy sauce was especially out of this world, with a nice sweetness to it and some kind of spice that we couldn't quite place. (We're guessing cumin, but can't really be sure.) Seriously, the soy sauce may have been the star of the evening—and that's not a knock on the other food we had, but really just a comment on how damn good the sauce was. We could drink that stuff.

Chef Ophaso's crispy Chinese salad, which came in a mound for the table was perhaps a little similar to what you might find at Continental, provided a nice palate cleanser. We especially appreciate that the salad was properly dressed—enough to enhance the flavor without drenching the crisp vegetables. That set us up for some very flavorful entrees—maybe too flavorful, in fact. We tried the black pepper sirloin steak, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare, just the way this Phillyist likes it—and would have asked for it, if we'd been asked at all how we wanted the meat cooked. We could envision someone who like their meat a bit more done than us having a look of horror if this thing was set down in front of them. But for us, it was just right. And it was one giant piece of steak. Fortunately, we were able to get help from our dining companions in almost finishing it. Almost.

We also got to try the pad see ew, a noodle bowl with flank steak, egg, broccoli, garlic, and bean sprouts. Or at least that's what we're told, because this bowl was so spicy, the chili was all we could taste, and the heat murdered our taste buds so that we couldn't really detect the flavor of, well, anything in the bowl. Fortunately, the pad see ew (and why would you put a dish on your menu with the name "ew" in it, even if it is the proper name) was the only real misstep of the evening. There were some confusing aspects of the dinner, not the least of which was why Chew Man Chu serves its fried rice as a course of its own, and after the entrees no less. We're not even sure whether the rice was any good; we had a couple nibbles to calm our mouths down after the pad see ew, but didn't really take note of it one way or the other.

And even though we were stuffed from the dumplings and meat, we had to find room for Chef Ophaso's house-made donuts, which were perfectly sweet and delicious, with a surprise bit of chocolate hidden in the center of the cinnamon-ish ball of goodness. They were good enough that our table asked for seconds despite our being very full.

As with any new restaurant, Chew Man Chu has some kinks to work out. But if it does, it will certainly become one of the city's hottest pre-theatre spots.

Quick Nosh:

Phillyist is a huge fan of Greensgrow, so much so that we've mentioned them bunches and bunches before, but just in case you can't place the name (or tear yourself away from this stellar article) we'll remind you of Greensgrow's fantastic mission. Dedicated to growing fresh veggies and fruits here in our fair city, making use of an otherwise barren super fund site, importing delicious local artisan groceries, and supplying ALL your urban gardening needs, Greensgrow provides a small oasis of agricultural calm in Fishtown.

Greensgrow is hoping to expand their reach by adding a community kitchen (ala Moosewood) to their repertoire and they need your help...and your cash. This Saturday, November 21st, Greensgrow is holding their second annual Whole Hog event at the Philadelphia Brewing Company. Trading an evening of food, drink, and merriment for your "suggested" donation of fifty bucks a head, this fundraiser is actually a bargain. When else do you spend just fifty bucks on dinner and drinks on a Saturday night?

The Philadelphia Brewing Company will be playing host to this feast of awesomeness. The menu? Oh, its not much. Just a feast featuring a Cuban style pig (thus the Whole Hog event), grilled salmon, vegan and vegetarian delights, freshly milled cider, and PBC's Harvest From the Hood beer made from hops grown at Greensgrow, and all this deliciousness is up for grabs for three solid hours. Doors open at 5, with event wrapping up around 8 p.m.

Still unwilling to open your wallet? Try to remember, all proceeds from the event support the amazing community kitchen. What is a community kitchen you ask? In addition to offering the use of a fully equipped, commercial kitchen to established and start up food-based businesses, the Kensington Community Kitchen will act as a resource for all by hosting workshops on food preservation, smart cooking and food preparation, small business organization, and food safety and handling. The kitchen will also serve as home base for Greensgrow's 2010 Low Income CSA.

To buy tickets early, visit Greensgrow online, pick up tickets at the door, or if you need more information, email Mary Seton at events@greensgrow.org. This Phillyist will be there with bells on, so if you want to rail against me and my dislike of early Christmas exploitation, here's your chance. I'll be the one with "Death to Elves" shirt.

I grew up thinking that I didn't like sweet potatoes. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I realized that it wasn't sweet potatoes, in and of themselves, that I had a problem with: it was the way they're served at Thanksgiving, sickly sweet and buried under marshmallows. (All due respect to marshmallows: I love you, but not in this particular instance.) Used with savory ingredients, however, sweet potatoes are nothing short of awesome. Plus, they're healthier than standard potatoes: high in fiber and vitamins and easier to eat unadorned by their white, starchier siblings. (Seriously, Yukon Golds have their place, but that place is usually under a large amount of butter or sour cream.) Once I discovered that I actually liked sweet potatoes, I was unstoppable, ordering them at any restaurant that had them on the menu and trying out every recipe I could find. Then, I started ignoring the recipes and experimenting. The below is basically a spicy hack of one of the first sweet potato recipes I tried, and it's still one of my favorite preparations for the bright orange tubers. Bring it to your Thanksgiving potluck for a twist on tradition: you may find yourself the most popular person at the party.

As always, the portions below are inexact. This recipe should serve four as a small side dish, but it's easily multiplied. My general rule of thumb is to use three jalapeños for every two sweet potatoes, but that can be adjusted according to how spicy the peppers are, and how spicy you want the dish to be overall.

Jalapeño-Lime Sweet Potatoes with Cilantro
Two large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
Three jalapeño peppers, seeds and veins removed
Two limes (zest and juice)
Olive oil
Cilantro, coarsely chopped (whatever amount you like—I tend to go overboard)
Salt and pepper, to taste

Heat oven to 425°. Combine potatoes, jalapeños, zest and juice from limes, and cilantro in baking dish. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir all ingredients, then roast 20-25 minutes (until just before fork-tender) covered, then stir again and roast an additional 5-10 minutes uncovered, until potatoes are fully tender. If desired, top with freshly grated cotija cheese and additional fresh cilantro. Serve immediately.

Note: don't throw your leftovers out. They microwave very well, and can—perhaps surprisingly—also be eaten somewhere between cold and room temperature if you're okay with the texture.

Quick Nosh

To the surprise of—nobody, probably—Philly's own Chef Jose Garces has made it to the final two on The Food Network's The Next Iron Chef. The finale airs this Sunday at 9 p.m.

Ah, the elusive truffle. Most of us have heard of them, some of us have gotten a small taste of them (usually in the form of an infused oil), but few of us have really gotten a chance to experience them. Thankfully, Chef Alison Barshak wants to give you a chance. This week only, her Alison Two restaurant in Fort Washington (right across from the R5 station and easy to get to from Center City) will be offering a $35 prix fixe menu focused on the elusive fungi.

Phillyist's favorite spot for autumn-themed cocktails, Rum Bar, has a new chef: Oscar Tecuapacho. Look for updates on the menu to include Bajan Pepperpot Soup and Red Snapper Ceviche.

Not interested in cooking this Thanksgiving? South Street's Supper will be offering a $50 prix fixe Thanksgiving feast, with seatings at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. All of your holiday favorites will be on the menu, and you won't even have to clean up afterward!

Vegan Treats fall selections, photo by author

If the martinis article earlier didn't give you enough of a taste of fall, allow us to tempt you with some desserts.

Despite Phillyist's previous love for Vegan Treats Bakery, I couldn't contain my skepticism. Seriously? That ain't right. How can you make baked goods vegan and NOT have them taste like the box in which they arrived? More to the point: milk, eggs, and butter are gifts from on high — why would you even attempt to replicate treats without those ingredients?

Trying Vegan Treats for myself shut my carnivorous piehole, I'll tell you that. Why do they do it? Simply, because they CAN.

Vegan Treats hooked us up with a sampling of their fall offerings: pumpkin pie, caramel pecan cake, pumpkin cheesecake, chocolate hazelnut pumpkin spice cake, caramel apple cheesecake, and pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing.

I'm not going to lie, the flavors are a little different. But their whipped cream is spot-on, the frosting on the caramel pecan cake is off the hook, and the cheesecakes are freakishly good. I've never met a pumpkin cheesecake I didn't want to marry, and this one is no different. If I didn't know it was vegan, I never would have guessed. It tastes like someone tweaked a standard recipe just a smidge, but not to its detriment in the least. Even better is the caramel apple cheesecake, which comes with gooey pecans on top. It's just sweet enough, and the texture and consistency are perfect.

The pumpkin pie is less sweet than what you'd normally find, and it's up to you if you think that's a good thing or not. (I do.) The crust is a little different, too, though I think it's something you could get used to.

The chocolate hazelnut pumpkin spice cake is not a flavor combination that had ever really occurred to me, and it wasn't really my favorite. But I think that was just the flavor combo. The chocolate flavor was dark and deep, but the cake itself was a tad dry. I much preferred the pumpkin spice cake, which was more moist and my favorite of the regular, non-"cheese," cakes.

You may ask what's in these things if there are no dairy products. But I do not ask. Ironically, much like when I consume a hot dog, it's all very "don't ask, don't tell."

Bottom line, and the best way I can put it — as a dessert junkie and a dairy/egg addict, I'd eat them again, and happily.

Quick Nosh:

Can't wait for the Cinco de Mayo and all its Mexican food-fueled goodness? Neither can Chef Alison Barshak, who'll be marking halfway to the next one on November 2 – 7 with a special "Cinco de Noviembre" menu at Alison Two.

Looks like potential Next Iron Chef Jose Garces has acquired the former Letto Deli on 13th Street and will be transforming the space to the next restaurant in his empire—with a "beer and brats" theme. Color us intrigued! (Via The Restaurant Club.)

Rittenhouse mainstay Rouge (which, oddly, doesn't seem to have a website of its own) has announced a new winter tasting menu that will include Macaroni and Cheese with fontina cream, chervil bread crumbs and Lancaster county goat cheese; Seared Day Boat Sea Scallops with mushroom-potato risotto and spiced red wine-golden raisin reduction; King Salmon with braised root vegetables and three meat glaze; Yellow Fin Tuna with eggplant and porcini mushroom chutney, olive oil and oregano; and Braised Beef Brisket with butternut squash puree, haircots verts and roasted garlic jus. Yes, please!

Dine for a cause this Saturday, as the Cambodian Children's Fund hosts its third annual fundraising dinner at Maxim Saigon Restaurant in South Philadelphia. Never had Cambodian food? We can't think of a better excuse to try it. $55 gets you in ($35 of which is tax deductible), but tickets aren't sold at the door, so be sure to book in advance.

Fall-themed Martinis at Rum Bar

Pumpkin pie martini, photo by author.

When Phillyist heard Rum Bar (2005 Walnut St.) was adding some new fall-themed martinis to their menu, we sent out our resident pumpkin junkies to investigate. Since we've heaped the love on Rum Bar in the past, Adam Kanter, owner/manager of Rum Bar, hooked us up with some samples so we could report back on how to get your fix of fall flavors in liquid form. (Sometimes chewing is just too much work!) With more than 140 varieties of rum and three levels of rum-flight programs for patrons to conquer (these guys do not mess around), we knew Rum Bar's fall drink offerings would not disappoint.

Let's start with the one that all the bars seem to be doing right now, the pumpkin pie martini, made from Golden Sun Rum, pumpkin spice liqueur, pumpkin puree, Canton ginger liqueur, vanilla-infused rum, and Cruzan rum cream. Oh, yes. It is everything you dream it will be, and more importantly, as with all the Rum Bar cocktails, it may be pricey, but it's $8 to $10 WORTH of alcohol. Kanter says all the Rum Bar's martinis contain no less than two ounces of alcohol, which is quite enough to get you somewhere between buzzed and blitzed, depending on your tolerance.

Next up, the bananas foster martini, by far our favorite of the three. Dark rum, real banana grilled and pureed on-site, creme de banana, caramel, rum cream—OH. Mah. God. BECKY. Obscenely, ludicrously tasty. We implore you: go.

Finally, the apple pie martini, which bartender Zeq Rudy created and entered into a cocktail competition: apple-cinnamon-infused rum, Oronoco Reserva Rum, Drambuie, cinnamon-sugar rim. Possibly the strongest of the three, or at least the strongest-tasting, the apple-pie martini is a tasty way to knock yourself flat on your fanny in 10 minutes or less. With bonus cinnamon.

While we were there, Kanter and his crew also let us sample some of their yummy foodstuffs. For appetizers, we tried their super-crispy chicken fingers with chipotle barbecue and mango honey mustard sauce and the mini-burgers with caramelized onions and tamarind aioli (please try these, they are ahhh-MAZING). For entrees, the Admiral's chicken, which is lightly breaded chicken with Admiral's rum sauce, flambeed red onion, and vegetable fried rice; and the Chilean sea bass, with avocado drizzle, roasted red bliss potatoes & asparagus. (Both also came with squash au gratin, which never occurred to us but totally wins at life, and a cornbread that, personally, we would have liked to be more moist, but if you're into the dryer cornbreads, you'll love it.) And for dessert, banana bread pudding, which is pretty much the best bread pudding ever, coming from someone who doesn't normally like bread pudding.

Finally we tried the Hemingway daquiri, with Rhum J.M. VSOP, maraschino liqueur, grapefruit juice, lime juice, grapefruit bitters, and sugar. Like the rest of the drinks, it's quick, tasty, and efficiently inebriating. You'll be less socially awkward in no time—plus, Rum Bar's extensive daiquiri menu is 1/2 price on Wednesday nights.

Check out the Rum Bar events page for other weekly drink specials and dates for live reggae, and also, be sure to check them out tonight for their Day of the Dead costume party, including costume contests, games, free snacks from 9 to 10 p.m., and a DJ. If you wear a costume and buy in advance, tickets are $11. If you're a killjoy and don't wear a costume, it's $25 at the door. (Be sure to call ahead to make sure it hasn't sold out.)

For some low cost musical good times that don't involve staying home with your ipod:

Amazing Baby at Johnny Brenda's - $10
Elizabeth & the Catapult at Tin Angel - $10
Stars of Track and Field at the North Star - $12 (Special ALL AGES show)

College Nights are no longer our friend, but they can be yours. If we could get 1/2 price entry into the Independence Seaport Museum you'd find us at the waterfront tonight (in reality you'll find this particular Phillyist at the Princeton/Ra Ra Riot show at the Troc). $5 for a private screening of tattoo film Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry and a tour through the Skin and Bones tatoo exhibit certainly isn't a bad way to start off a Friday. 5-10 p.m. and then you can take your tatooed ass to Tattoed Mom's for some yo ho ho and a bottle of Rum.

The Legendary Blue Horizon hosts its 6th Annual Cancer Awareness Boxing Event. You won't see Rocky tonight, but you can watch Darrell Jones and Muhammed Tuba punch the crap out of each other for the sake of saving one of our favorite body parts.

We're just dipping into October and that means it's First Friday time in Olde City again. First Fridays always seem better in the fall. Wander into a gallery for the free wine, stay for the art. It's our favorite kind of walkabout.

Speaking of wine, the coolest new Museum/Research Center in town, the Chemical Heritage Foundation is turning one year old tonight. Tria wine director Michael McCaulley will be leading the party with vino-related discussions at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 p.m. Free with your new fancy pants wine knowledge: A sample of Spanish cava and a periodic table cupcake from JPM Catering.

Now, if you're super fancy (read: super rich) you'll want to suit up for the 5th Annual Gravedigger's Ball at the Crystal Tea Room. We wish we could go honor Harry the K with the Friends of Laurel Hill, but alas we are not super fancy and the Powerball drawing isn't until tomorrow.

Any events tonight that you think Philadelphia should know about? Let us know and leave details in the comments. And if there's an upcoming event you think we should share in About Tonight, e-mail us or Tweet us @phillyist!

Foodsday Tuesday: Falling for Fall

Aside from generally awesome weather, the arrival of autumn has one big perk: fall food. Heavier and more flavorful than a summer menu, but neither as comforting nor as fattening as winter meals (if you don't count Thanksgiving, that is), fall brings with its gorgeous color palate a collection of foods you can't get fresh any other time of year. (And really, who wants pumpkin in July?) A plethora of new produce appears in supermarkets (does anyone know what to do with a five-pound bag of assorted gourds, by the way?), and restaurants roll out new menus and seasonal events. Among them, Old City's Fork Restaurant, which will (among other events in the coming weeks) hold a special fisherman's dinner on October 10—featuring fish that the guests catch themselves in a fishing excursion earlier that day.

Rum Bar wants to get your harvest-time drinking off to a good start. New this season will be martinis of both the bananas foster and pumpkin pie persuasions. And speaking of pumpkins, Phillyist suburban fave Alison two turns one in October and will feature a Pumpkin Prix Fixe menu for both lunch and dinner October 26-29.

Celebrating another fall facet, football, Conshy's Gypsy Saloon will feature Saturday specials for college ball and Sunday specials for NFL games. Want to watch the Monday night game? How about an order of all-you-can-eat mussels?

And that, folks, is just a selection of your fall dining options. Leave us a comment and let us know what we're missing!

Quick Nosh:

Speaking of fall foods, a selection of notable area chefs have posted some yummy-looking autumnal recipes on the Center City District website.

Don't forget the Unbreaded Sandwich Smash, held this Sunday (10/4) at the Bellevue.

SJ HOT Chefs' restaurant week, held twice a year (sound familiar?) will be held October 18-23 this year.

333 Belrose in Radnor celebrates its 10th anniversary this October with a $33.30 prix fixe menu with such items as slow braised short ribs and chipoltle black bean soup. ::Drool::

Also in the 'burbs, Savona will be celebrating everyone's favorite German drinking holiday tomorrow with a $55 beer dinner and weekly beer classes throughout October.

Chef Jose Garces must have at least made it through the first elimination on The Next Iron Chef—otherwise, why would he invite fans of the show (and his food!) to hang with him for the show's season premiere this weekend? Party starts at Distrito at 8 p.m. this Sunday (October 4). Admission is $35 and "covers plentiful passed hors d’oeuvres, house and frozen margaritas, and cans of Tecate from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m." according to the media alert we received.

Ladies use the boobies to get the free beers from the boys. The boys buy the beers hoping to get a pass to second base. Right? Oh so wrong. Brews for Boobies is an extra special pub crawl happening on Saturday, October 3rd in support of the American Breast Cancer Foundation.

You can get your drink on for this worthy cause by choosing one of two different pub crawl paths: Olde City or "Center City" (by Center City they mean Rittenhouse area). Your $25 registration fee goes directly to the American Breast Cancer Foundation and gets you a very cool Brews for Boobies T-shirt. Pull it on and follow your Philly Beer Scene crawl captains to your first boozy destination. There you'll be entitled to special food and drink discounts for about an hour and a half. Then it's off to the next spot! Eight excellent Philadelphia pubs, including Phillyist's favorites Sugar Mom's, Eulogy, Nodding Head, National Mechanics, and Good Dog, are included on each crawl.

There are more than 1.6 million breast cancer survivors living in America today. Raise a pint in their honor and raise some money for The American Breast Cancer Foundation. You were going to spend your Saturday evening being all drunky mc-drunk face anyway right? Registration ends today, so sign up ASAP!

2nd Annual Brews for Boobies Pub Crawl
Saturday, October 3, 2009
$25/pp - Registration ends TODAY, Monday, Sept. 21
Both the Olde City and Center City Crawls start at 12:30pm.
See the Philly Beer Scene website for bar listings, schedule information, and drink special details.

A few weeks ago, several Phillyists convened at The Black Sheep Pub in Rittenhouse for some good ol' fashioned Johnny Goodtimes Quizzo. We came in second and caught a lot of ex post facto ire for our team size—but that's neither here nor there. This post is about the menu at the Black Sheep, which was full of grammatical errors. This one may have been the most egregious, not just because of the use of a possessive rather than a plural, but because of its proximity to the correct pluralization.

For the last time, folks, the only time you should have an apostrophe in your plural is if you're the Oakland A's—when the apostrophe stands in for the rest of the word "Athletics."

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.

Last time that Dan Aykroyd did anything of note in Philadelphia, he was running around with Eddie Murphy trying to keep two old dudes from cornering the entire frozen orange juice market. You'd think it would take him less than 26 years to figure out that orange juice is always made better by vodka (or champagne, but that's beside the point), but unlike Louis Winthorpe III, Aykroyd isn't a Harvard man, so we can't blame him. While the timing may be a little off, Dan Aykroyd is finally bringing booze to the party he started in Philly all those years ago—his own Crystal Head Vodka, to be exact. Aykroyd will be signing some of the awesomely-shaped Crystal Head skull bottles at the Pennsylvania Wine and Spirits Store at 1218 Chestnut today from 4 to 6 p.m. If you swing by to get s bottle signed, be sure to ask him about pork bellies. He might not know, but his friend Eddie might have given him some advice before his trip.

Two of our favorite things about the autumn weekends, now combined in one totally weird commercial. (Via Miss Bee, via Bleeding Green Nation.) And hey, new IHOP just opened at Juniper and Walnut!

My Texas upbringing makes me generally suspicious of anybody who doesn't eat meat, and even more suspicious of those who have completely sworn off animal products altogether. (To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I'd ever heard of veganism until college.) I'm tofu-averse, completely addicted to cheese, and entirely too fond of bacon in all its various incarnations. Though not generally a fan of dessert, I tend to believe that the best ones are made from metric tons of butter and/or cream and/or eggs, and so if I'm feeling like a final course, I almost always order the crème brûlée.

Which all goes to say that when Vegan Treats in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, started getting buzz, I wasn't interested. Vegan cheesecake? Without actual cheese? What was this heresy? Even if I had a big sweet tooth, how could I pass up the real deal for something that would no doubt be tasteless, lifeless, and more importantly, animal product-less.

And then, a friend o' Phillyist offered to send some Vegan Treats my way. Careful to clarify that he, himself, is not a vegan, he offered a strong endorsement, calling the desserts some of the best he's ever had, eggs and cream and butter be damned.

And holy shit, he wasn't too far off base.

Three (three!) boxes of assorted goodies arrived at my office one Thursday and the contents were quickly devoured by myself and my coworkers, with not much left to take home to Ross. (I did rescue the "Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Bomb" for him, about which he simply stated "FTW." I think that's an endorsement.) The texture of the treats was definitely different from their animal product-laden counterparts, but not distractingly so, and the flavors were all dead on. The triple berry and caramel apple cheesecakes were among my personal favorites, and the chocolate-hater in me (that's right, folks, I can't stand the stuff) appreciated the raspberry white chocolate brownie. And oh my, you should see the size of the cookies. The idea of finishing one could cause a lesser person a serious panic attack.

So, have I been converted? Am I going vegan after seeing the light and discovering the sheer un-necessity of animal products in my desserts?

Um, no. Not even kind of. But I would definitely welcome more Vegan Treats into my life, with arms wide open.

Then my conscience would be a little bit clearer after a steak dinner.

Quick Nosh:

Sad that summer's over and Center City Sips is no more? The Terrace at 13, adjoining the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, is continuing Sips into September—and expanding to Wednesdays through Fridays.

Anyone else discovered foodadelphia yet? The epicurean stepchild of the now-defunct PhillyBlog, the site launched two months ago and is beginning to pick up steam. Go join the community!

The unstoppable Jose Garces has converted the downstairs area of his popular University City restaurant, Distrito, into The Cantina at Distrito, which will feature a special $10-and-under menu. If it's as good as the upstairs menu, which we have no doubt it will be, we strongly recommend you run, don't walk, to get some tasty Mexican treats.

McGillin's Olde Ale House kicked off Octoberfest last week and will continue celebrating all things beer-related through the fourth annual Midtown Village Fall Festival, on Saturday, October 3.

Recently we received a request from an out of town reader for our non-touristy recommendations for the best local spots. More specifically our favorites in Food, Galleries, Booze, Books, Clothes, Music, "Women" (back to this later) and "Any other cool shit that you think people who are into eating, drinking, art, reading, music, etc. would like to see." Well, we like to appease so we'll give it a shot. Oh, and dear reader, we're not a hipster either, so if you accidentally wander into hipster territory based on our solid normal person advice, sorry. It can't be helped. It's Philly. They're everywhere.

Food and Drinks By Genre

Mexican: For margaritas and more venture into South Philly to Cantina at 1651 E. Passyunk Ave. I mean go directly to South Philly, do not stop to look around for something closer to Center City, do not collect $200. And try not to drop $200 on premium tequila shots with the awesome spicy tomato chasers either. Regular old pitchers will probably do just fine and leave you some dough left for cab fare back to wherever you're staying. And that's a good thing, because walking in a straight line afterward ain't gonna happen. Plenty of vegetarian options and outdoor seating available.

Asian: Philly's Chinatown is packed with good Asian food. You can't go too wrong picking at random but we'd like to point you in the direction of Vietnam's killer martinis and amazing crispy spring rolls. Warning: don't be confused by its western neighbor, Vietnam Palace, which is just across the street. If you can't tell east from west, you're in trouble. Philly's on a grid. Learn fast. Or, remember we're talking about one with the blue sign. Blue, not green. If you're craving Japanese go ahead and leave Vietnam and Chinatown behind and head for Sushi Planet. It's a small and cute BYOB on South 3rd that makes the most delicious sushi that you can actually afford. We like the apple and mango rolls. This is a great place to skip your normal spicy tuna roll and try something new.

Traditional: Searching out the far less exotic cuisine of pizza and beer? Two words: West Philly. No, seriously, hop the trolley to Dock Street Brewing Co. on 50th and Baltimore. Local beers with crazy names are brewed before your eyes in the converted old firehouse and the pizza comes in varieties you wouldn't believe. Apple smoked bacon and Gorgonzola? Creme fraiche, spinach, leeks? They've got both. And normal old cheese and pepperoni, too, if you're not that adventurous. If you just want beer and you're too lazy to go to West Philly, there's no shortage of places we can send you. Try Eulogy in Old City, Standard Tap in Northern Liberties, Monk's or Nodding Head in Rittenhouse, or, if you're still on good terms with South Philly after your tequila adventure at Cantina, P.O.P.E. (although we hear they have a new chef making up tasty treats lately, too).

Happy Hour: This one's simple. Bump is the best. Sweet potato fries + discounted specialty cocktails = Yum. If the naked men on the walls aren't to your taste, Good Dog makes for a good alternative.

Late Night Bites: Nothing has the power to cure your hangover before it begins like the Munchie Platter at Midtown II on 11th and Sansom. Mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, onion rings, cheese fries: all that is good and deadly. We have other great diner options, but only one place to get a Munchie Platter. Not recommended for tourists with heart conditions.

Brunch: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but we know you're not getting up early for it. Go to Sabrina's in the Italian Market or Art Museum area if you want straight-up good food. National Mechanics is for those who like booze with their brunch. Editor Jill doesn't much like National for night time on the weekends and that's completely fair. Fridays and Saturdays can be incredibly invaded and obnoxious. But Sundays 11 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. it's still the best place to make your own Bloody Mary.

Shopping

There might have been a time when hitting South Street was worthwhile. That time is gone. Sure, head down for a late night Lorenzo's slice if you must. And there's nothing wrong with a show at the TLA. But Zipperhead is gone. No, Crash Bang Boom is not the same. The scene is dead. Most of the time it's just a huge hassle to fight your way through the swarming tourists, bad parents, and emo kids. It's just not worth it no matter how badly you want a new novelty T-shirt or adult toy (NSFW). But then again, if you actually are one of those aforementioned tourists, maybe you don't mind all that nonsense.

For awesome non-novelty T-shirts and more try Sailor Jerry. Ladies retro fashions are to be had at Vintage Connection on 9th and Bainbridge. Otherwise spend some time wandering around Old City. There are lots of cool shops on North 2nd and 3rd Streets like Lost + Found for clothes, AKA Music for nerdy music stuff, The Book Trader for nerdy literary stuff, and Brave New Worlds for nerdy comic book type stuff. Our old favorite, Big Jar Books, alas, is closed. Oh, and the galleries are up there too.

Night Time

We never shut up about North Star Bar so why would we now? Go there, it's awesome. Silk City and The Barbary are the most fun for dancing and The Trocadero is famous for punk rock shows. Fluid has great drum and bass (check their calendar, dates vary) and DJ ?uestlove of The Roots is in residence Saturdays when he's in town. If you hate live music and dancing, check back up in the food and drinks section for something more relaxed, or kick back in one of Sugar Mom's bumper cars. The basement bar can be tough to find if you don't know the way. It's tucked away on Church St. just one block above Market St. between 2nd and 3rd (map).

Women

Now, on to our reader's request for places to meet ladies. Cute Philly girls can be found at any of our favorite spots. The same can be said for guys... and girls looking for girls and guys looking for guys, too. We're all kinds of diverse in this town. Just be nice or we'll kick your ass. Some stereotypes are true. If you're looking for a late-night drunken rendezvous (not recommended) there are ads in the back of the free weeklies and Lucy's Hat Shop just before last call for that (WE REPEAT: NOT RECOMMENDED). If you want to "look" at the pretty girls you can do so at Delilah's or bikini bar Cheerleaders (NSFW). Hey, we cover all our bases. If you tell us you like large dance floors populated with sweaty college students and booming Black Eyed Peas—why, we don't know, but we don't discriminate—we'll point you to Cavanaughs River Deck. If you like gay 'ole piano sing-a-longs we'll gladly accompany you to Tavern on Camac. The great thing about Philly is there is something for everyone. To that end we'll give you something you didn't ask for:

Outdoors

For children or the child-like, just off the Ben Franklin Bridge, Franklin Square Park has a carousel and mini golf. Back out in West Philly, we like the Clark Park Farmers' Market, held Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For biking or hiking try the Schuylkill River Trail. Or step off of the path and into the water. Hidden River Outfitters offers various kayak tours down the river whose name is both harder to spell and pronounce than Delaware.

There you go. More than enough stuff to fill one weekend. Our recommendations are in no particular travel order and are located all throughout the city. But no worries, public transportation is easy to figure out and most places are walkable. Cabs are recommended for drinking exploits far from your crash pad. Yelp lets you send addresses to your phone and Not For Tourists can also be helpful. And don't forget to check Phillyist for the scoop on upcoming weekend events. If we missed your favorite spot feel free to post it in the comments below. But please, no whining about the tourists taking over. Our momma taught us how to share.

Something about a fun invitation—this time in the form of a note tied to the stem of a sunflower—makes me want to cancel all plans and head to the event in question. This invite beckoned me to Girasole, a new(ish) restaurant in the ground floor of Center City's Dranoff-developed Symphony House condominium building that got its start in Atlantic City. The small restaurant, with its gold-upholstered banquettes and black granite tabletops, isn't as bright and cheery as one would expect from a restaurant named for a sunflower, but it's certainly Italian in that "Dude, where's my Godfather theme music?" kind of way. (It's an observation, not a negative. Perhaps negative, though, are the plastic chairs at every table in the dining room. Summer heat + short skirt + plastic = not the most pleasant dining situation.)

But enough about the decor—there's food to discuss! And wine: the wine list is impressive, including a few Oregon wines I got hooked on during a recent trip to Portland and can't find anywhere in Philadelphia. For our dinner, though, we enjoyed an easy-drinking (if forgettable) trebbiano with our first courses, and then switched to a very smooth and enjoyable ripasso when it came time for the pasta courses.

The meal started off with a melanze e zucchine al forno, a sort of lasagna that utilized eggplant instead of pasta. By far the best thing we sampled all night (and I usually don't even like eggplant!), the dish was light and fresh-tasting, using summer's best ingredients: tomatoes and zucchini, with just enough mozzarella cheese to hold everything together. Then we were on to a very fresh but somewhat standard crudo sampler. Standard, however, doesn't mean un-enjoyable and I enjoyed every bite of my raw fish, Italian-style, far more than the sushi I had for dinner the following night.

Next up: two pasta selections, both with noodles that certainly had homemade taste and consistency. The first, a tagliolini with shrimp and fresh tomatoes, was light, summery, and perfectly portioned. The second, a divine passatelli with sausage (and mushrooms, if unlike me you didn't have a traumatizing high school biology teacher and can actually eat them without cringing) was much heavier than its predecessor but because it may have been some of the most-perfectly cooked pasta I've had in months, I bore the weight gladly.

Unfortunately, the entrees did not go as well as the courses before them: a filet that, while relatively-well seasoned was over-cooked, chewy, and cold; and two beautifully presented but slightly briny jumbo prawns, especially inexplicable because of the shrimp pasta that had preceded them only two courses before. Fortunately, dessert wasn't far behind and a homemade apple dessert stood out among three chocolate selections also on the plate as a welcome palate cleanser.

In summary: Girasole—decor meh, entrees blah...but hooray for vino, pasta, and eggplant. I wouldn't rule out a return visit.

Quick Nosh:

Like sandwiches? Not as much as the guys at Unbreaded, who will be hosting Sandwich Smash 2009, a chef's tasting and demonstration event this October. Tickets went on-sale today after a week-long pre-sale. Sandwich Smash has partnered with Philabundance and event attendees are encouraged to donate peanut butter and jelly to the cause.

When you think "gluten free," you don't usually think beer, but all eight Iron Hill Brewery locations in the area have launched a special gluten-free menu with over 40 dishes. Great work, guys—now how about a Philly location?

Top Chef: Las Vegas premieres on Bravo tomorrow and will feature two (female!) Philadelphia contestants: Jennifer Zavala of Xochitl and Jennifer Carroll of 10 Arts.
