Countdown to 2008: Jill's Five Best Epicurean Experiences of 2007

At this point, I guess most of you readers out there know that I don't eat to live – I live to eat. So it stands to reason that I've had a few dining experiences this year that have been especially memorable. Some of them appeared on Phillyist, and others did not. But gourmets and gourmands alike rejoice: they're all here, in all their mouth drooling glory.

Foodsday Tuesday: Auld Lang Syne

With New Year's Eve less than two weeks away, dinner reservations at local restaurants are going fast.

Countdown to 2008: Bill's Top Ten Beers of 2007

Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2008 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know!

So It’s Kind of Like Maids A’Milking

When the weather outside is frightful, thoughts may not immediately turn to the contents of the freezer. Phillyist thinks this is a major oversight: what about ice cream and warm pie? Hot fudge sundaes? (Do you see where we’re going with this?) The folks at Turkey Hill are set to help you mend your misguided snacking ways with their 12 Days of Ice Cream, which starts today and runs through December 25. Every day will bring a new entry on The Ice Cream Journal, including mention of an ice cream related product. Comment on the post, and you’ll be entered in a drawing for said product. On December 26 they’ll pick a winner for the grand prize: a one-year supply of Turkey Hill ice cream. Possible post-Christmas gift? Sign us (or rather comment us) up.

A Kid's Table You Won't Mind Bellying Up to

Phillyist loves us some grub, and we love the Restaurant Weeks about town. We just heard about another: Kid's Table. Through Sunday, December 16, participating restaurants will be donating a portion of their proceeds to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to fund research and medical treatment. The list of places is on the short side, but hopefully this is an event that will grow with time. Besides, we've always wanted to try Ristorante Panorama, and...

Foodsday Tuesday: Grazie, Mario!

I've spoken before of my love for the Food Network. And now, I have one more thing to love about my favorite addicting cable network: swag. Just before Thanksgiving, they contacted me to see if I was interested in trying out any of the items from their Holiday Gift Guide. "All of them," I replied. They informed me that they couldn't send me one of everything, but that they'd send me the Calphalon Nonstick Everyday...

Positively Crafty

This weekend, at Standard Tap (2nd and Poplar), start your Christmas shopping with one-of-a-kind gifts created by local artists. PositiveSapce hosts its annual holiday craft sale, showcasing the goods of almost 20 local artists. Forget about buying yet another DVD boxed set and choose from beautiful glass, jewelry, paintings, prints, crafts, and original artwork. Holidays are for multitasking. Get your brunch downstairs, and eye up PositiveSpace's wares upstairs. More information is available here. Standard Craft...

Foodsday Tuesday: Dreidel, Dreidel, and Greasy Food

Here's the story, as I can remember it: Under the Greek rule of Antiochus IV, Jews were forbidden from practicing their religion. Jewish temples were desecrated; symbols important to Greek polytheism were hung over the altars; and those who stood in vocal opposition to the Greeks, like the Maccabee clan, were persecuted and attacked, their temples nearly destroyed. With the temple nearly destroyed, there was only enough consecrated olive oil remaining to light the...
