ArtIST: Britt Miller

An advertising professional by day, a grad student and artist by night, Britt Miller describes herself as a "lifelong artist" who draws inspiration mainly from her travels abroad. While she majored in Advertising at Penn State, Britt's interest was captivated mainly by her minors in International Art and International Studies. And while studying in Florence, Italy, Britt's slumbering artistic persona was awakened by the ancient city's rich history. Inspired by this birthplace of Renaissance art, Britt decided to focus her energies solely on her International Art studies, and began actively painting and selling her art in 2004.

Using all of the colors of the rainbow, Britt's canvases are "bright, bold, spontaneous, moving, and fun." The artist uses mostly acrylic paint on canvas, and attempts to convey a feeling of "lightheartedness" via her work, incorporating quick brush strokes and semi-abstract subject matter. She finds that acrylics allow her to add layer upon layer of paint without the colors becoming muddled. Britt notes that the medium's ability to dry quickly preserves the bright, crisp colors, which are "crucial to [her] style." The end result is a piece that is as kinetic as it is dynamic.

While Britt yearns to revisit her previous travel destinations of Europe, the Mediterranean, Canada, Mexico, India, and Southeast Asia, her heart is "anchored" here in Philadelphia. The artist enjoys Philly's rich art scene and the fact that art "surrounds us" here through the City's murals, sculptures, and architecture. And, because Philly city scenes are a frequent subject in her paintings, Britt describes the city's influence on her work as "ginormous." From the Magic Gardens and the buzz of the crowded city streets to the Vegas-like lights of Geno's, Britt finds meaning in Philadelphia's wealth of sights and sounds.

However, Philly isn't Britt's sole source of inspiration: she tells us, "I have files upon files of pictures that I've torn from magazines, newspapers, and Internet print-outs. My phone is always readily available to snap pictures of things I encounter on my daily adventures, usually to upload and share immediately to Facebook and Twitter.

Armed with a wealth of inspirational sources, Britt is able to heed her favorite piece of advice: "The more things you see, the more ideas you have." The painter elaborates, telling us that "with every new experience and different sight, we are rejuvenated with different ideas." This isn't to say that Britt has it all figured out. When we ask her to describe her greatest accomplishment, she replies, "I feel that I've had many professional and personal accomplishments in my life thus far, but that the 'greatest' is yet to come."
