Last year, we told you about Bowling for Bears, an event conceived by Jenny Silver in 2005, when she was only 9 years old. What began as a mission to provide joy, in the form of a snuggly teddy bear, to children affected by Hurricane Katrina has now become a Philadelphia area-focused effort, providing Build-A-Bears for children at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, St. Christopher's Hospital, Cooper University Hospital, the Camden Rescue Mission and other local children in need in shelters and care facilities.
This year's Bowling for Bears event will be held on Sunday at the Cherry Hill Playdrome. A minimum donation of $8 (the cost of one Build-a-Bear) is required for admission, but gets you free bowling and snacks. The first 100 people through the doors will also get a free t-shirt, and a silent auction at the event will feature items donated from the Adventure Aquarium, the Philadelphia Zoo, Swanky Bubbles, and several professional sports teams.
Not able to get out to Cherry Hill Sunday but still interested in donating a bear to a child in need? You can send your donations (made payable to Bowling for Bears) to Post Office Box 4644, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034 or you can donate online with a credit card at www.bowlingforbears.org.
