Yo, Philly in the News

  • On Saturday night, off-duty police officer Frank Tepper shot and killed 21-year-old William Panas, Jr. during a large street brawl in Port Richmond. Now there are some serious questions about whether the shooting was justified, and whether Tepper was drunk when it happened.
  • We knew we loved Stu Bykofsky for a reason. Byko is with us on the whole "cyclists should have to follow the rules of the road like the rest of us" thing. Honestly, why is this even controversial?
  • National Sudoku Championship officials have stripped third-place winner Eugene Varshavsky of his prize from last month's tournament after an investigation and "re-test" of Varshavsky's sudoku skills made it appear that he had cheated in the tournament.
  • We hate pigeons as much as anyone. (They're rats with wings, and please stop feeding them.) But we've got to say, using them for target practice is going a bit far, even for us.
  • With the Dad Vail regatta leaving town, city officials are considering whether they can start up a new race, or lure an existing one to Philadelphia to replace the Dad Vail.
  • The Flyers fell into a 5-2 hole against the Avalanche last night before trying to mount a comeback in the third period. They came up just short, though, losing 5-4.
  • The St. Joe's hoopsters played DePaul tight in their Paradise Jam third-place game last night, but the Hawks let the game slip away in the final two minutes.
  • Today's AccuWeather forecast: Mild and cloudy with morning drizzle, high of 58°. Cloudy tonight with a low of 44°. Also, eat fish.

We do not love Stu's column. I mean, we love following the rules of the road, but we think he's silly what with the grumpiness, bombast, and ridiculous ideas for parking.

Stu's numbers are a little bit off when he gripes about the bike lanes taking up 50% of the road, and yeah, he's a little obnoxious—but it's the DN, what do you want? (But we do still love Stu—one of the biggest advocates for the city's shelter animals there is.)

Personally, I'm definitely with him on cyclists' sense of entitlement, superiority, and disregard for the rules of the road. But that's a conversation we've had before. I think we've pretty well established that you (and Tom) are not the problem. But you have to admit there are loads upon loads of problem cyclists in the city. Byko is dead-on when it comes to what cyclists really need to do:

As already is required by law, you will stop at red lights and stop signs, signal for turns, ride on the right and in the same direction as traffic and stay off the damn sidewalks.
It's really not too much to ask.

That column angered me. I agree with the following the rules thing, but this sentence: "but it [bicycling] will never be a serious mode of transportation in and around Philly" really pissed me off. He acts like every cyclist is an asshole who wants to break all the rules, when in reality a good many of us follow the rules of the road, and I would argue that a significant portion of those who do not are ignorant of the actual rules. Many people do not know that bikes don't go on sidewalks--think of the drivers who constantly scream at cyclists to get on the sidewalks because they don't want to deal with us on the road. I think there needs to be a greater effort made in educating everyone--motorist, bikers, and peds--in the rules of transportation.

Everyone needs to follow the rules, ya know? When I drove more, it was terrifying when a cyclist came out of nowhere, but now as a cyclist--nothing gets the heart pounding harder than when a car brushes my thigh and knocks me towards the ground.

it's darling how Stu cites the naked bike ride group, but neither the silent ghost bike ride nor the super-adorable tweed ride, as if to prove that all bike riders are clearly crazy hippydippies.

ugh.

...and all while philly.com continues to use photos of the naked bike ride as part of its t&a sidebar photo feature, along with "lingerie football" and other crap.

His numbers aren't "a little bit off." A few lanes on a few streets is not 50%. Heck, even if we're talking just about Spruce and Pine blocks that have bike lanes, it's only 33%: one lane for bikes, one lane for moving cars, AND ANOTHER FOR PARKED CARS. People like Stu are so blinded by their car-centric bias that they can't even see those parked cars.
