There is no doubt in my mind that Philly has the douchiest, most belligerent fans in the country. I'm from Brooklyn, New York--I hate the Yankees, by the way--and I've seen some ridiculous fans. Yankee fans are too cocky, and their only arguments consist of relating their opponents to gays and women, or the overused "world champions 839058349057984562 times over" statement. Red Sox fans can be obnoxious, but it's all out of true love and devotion to their team, even if the Sox are sucking. Phillies fans, though? They are so defensive, violent, sore losers, and even sore winners. This is my second year at school here in Philly, and now having seen the Phils get into the world series twice, I can say that the phans are more derogatory than celebratory. As soon as the phils got into the series this year--note that the Yankees hadn't made it in yet--the first thing people were cheering here, rather than "let's go Phillies", was "fuck the Yankees". If you challenge anything involving the Phillies, you risk getting mauled or endlessly verbally abused by a shit ton of people. Phillies fans hold grudges like I've never seen before. I'm a Mets fan, personally, and I can honestly say that I hadn't heard of a Mets-Phils "rivalry" before I came to Philly. The Mets are obviously not the best team, and we don't try to be. It's about loyalty through the good and bad, and as a faithful fan, I can say that the Mets really care about a rivalry with the Yanks and Braves. Sorry Phillies, but we really don't care about you all too much. Finally, with this world series pinning New York against Philadelphia, I'm finding Phillies fans ripping New York a lot, and I just think it's a waste. There is NO comparison between New York and ANY city. New York is unlike any other city in the country; the two places have completely different cultures, demographics, sizes, and feels to them. There's a reason why New York is considered to be the capitol of the world, so I suggest Philadelphians take it down a notch, cos when you fuck with New York--baseball aside--you will lose.

wait, are you serious about never having heard of a mets-phils rivalry?

when i dated a mets fan in 2002, his entire family (which included eight uncles) had jibberjabber back and forth because i was a phillies fan.

imagine that, eight fully grown men jumping on the 18 year old girlfriend of their nephew.

"imagine that, eight fully grown men jumping on the 18 year old girlfriend of their nephew." Poor choice of words for those of us with dirty minds. Ew. And Mets fans at that. Thanks a lot Bee!

I'm sorry. The only people I know of who consider New York to be the capital (with an "a," by the way) of the world are New Yorkers.

I vehemently disagree with, and hate, the bad reputation that all Philly fans have around the country. Every team and town has obnoxious fans.

But I am a native Philadelphian and have always felt that NYC is the greatest city in the world. And no, it's not just because my girlfriend lives there. She's not even from there originally. I have always loved NYC and been objective to realize that it is the greatest city in the world.

Really? I've got to say, New York is one of my least favorite cities in the world. And this isn't sour grapes from last night; I pass on going to NYC if I can at all avoid it. Philly's dining and sports scenes are right there with New York's, and although New York has a more robust arts culture, for the cost of living of the city, I'll take London any day.
