Despite all signs—and threats by Governor Rendell to really put the screws to both SEPTA and TWU Local 234—pointing to a SEPTA contract resolution without a work stoppage, the drivers' and mechanics' union has called a strike.
Have fun getting to work/school this morning, y'all. How many of you suckers (like us) paid for a monthly transpass because it looked like there wouldn't be a strike?

Supposedly they've walked out on talks today and nothing else is scheduled. Speaking as someone who relies on Septa, this is infuriating. When I think of all those advertisements Septa put up trying to convince the public to depend on them it just kills me.
I can't believe I was standing in line at Suburban Station with 20+ other folks yesterday buying transpasses. Septa = Asshole of the Month, if not the Year.
I don't know if it's SEPTA that's the asshole of the month, though. I think it's the union.
Assholes all around.
Someone needs to put pressure on Septa to honor passes that people aready hold - especially student passes! Why should passengers using alternate routes pay twice? This is how these strikes don't hurt the company as much as one would think.
actually, from the website:
Transit Pass Redemption
Unused Passes purchased prior to a service interruption may be fully or partially redeemed. Customers should retain any unused passes until return instructions are published.
Hmmm, what is the definition of an "unused pass"? Because they say that passes "may be...partially redeemed," I would assume (hope) they prorate a refund based on the number of days the "service interruption" lasts.
I fear that those who bought passes for the month yesterday, and used them yesterday, will not be able to get refunds. Because they're not technically unused at that point.
i would imagine that it would be a proration.
the strike forced me to find alternatives to get to temple's main campus. from now on, strike or no strike, i'll head to broad and locust and take the temple shuttle to campus - for free.
thank you, local 234, for teaching me that i don't need to fund the cost of living increase you're demanding, which i'm not getting.
also, i don't know which union they're a part of, but the people working 30th Street Station and other RR locations have been awesome. I saw hundreds of people in line last night and the place was still relatively orderly and well-run, and the employees were friggin' friendly and smiling.
SEPTA Union workers/members should be ashamed of their actions. I understand that they feel they are treated unfairly....and maybe some are. However, most people start working at SEPTA making at least $14 dollars an hour...that is just to scrub toilets. There is a better way to go about things. Most of us would not have a job if we just walked out at everything we dissaproved of. Do they realize how many people are responsible for at least half their healthcare coverage? The ungreatful fools should appreciate they have a job that is willing to cover 94% of their healthcare benefits. They should be happy they are offered benefits at all! Local 234 is a mockery of unions worldwide. Do they realize how many people are unable to make it to work/school as a result of their selfish actions? They have put dents in wallets, GPA's and families all around. No wonder many businesses shy away from unions. They should be ashamed. SEPTA needs to loose their monopoly. It is time our state legislators got together and create a bill so that this won't happen in the future. If SEPTA had competition, this would never happen!
