If Julie & Julia taught us anything, it was not how to cook. It was that middle aged women have money to burn. These ladies are likely to seek out Ms. Earhart at theatres this weekend. Ladies, here at Phillyist, we salute you. There should be more movies about strong women, made by women and your audience reminds the studios that such films are worth making.

Astro Boy
It's about time the pioneering, peace-making anime robot finally got his very own feature-length 3-D animated film. Now he's just got to save the world from an alien invasion and reconcile with the scientist father who created him. All in a day's work for a world-famous superhero.

Bronson
Loosely based on the true story of the "most violent prisoner in Britain," Bronson takes lots of liberties when it comes to the retelling of Michael Patterson's criminal exploits. If we had to spend 30 years in solitary confinement, we'd probably have to make up a totally new story, too. A compelling examination of the celebrity criminal phenomenon.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
Paul Weitz should know it's hard enough to translate one book. Why in the world would he try to stuff the plots the first three books of The Saga of Darren Shan into one movie? Oh, and by the way, in this world vampires aren't dangerous, never kill, don't bite in order to turn people, and don't live forever—they just age really slowly. Lame.

The Damned United
The notorious Brian Clough was the Leeds United soccer coach for a mere 44 days. His stint didn't end well then and we're guessing it doesn't end well now either. Go see this if you're a football fanatic, but don't expect strict historical accuracy. Ex-midfielder Johnny Giles sued to make sure the source material was labeled as fiction.

An Education
We could tell you that a British actress you've probably never heard of (Carey Mulligan) is Audrey Hepburn-luminous in this 1960s coming-of-age tale, but really it's easier to do this: Peter Sarsgaard, meet Nick Hornby. Philly, meet indie darling Oscar bait.

Good Hair
Chris Rock made a documentary about black hair. It's charming and funny and full of famous faces. It's already been playing in select cities, but should do well with its wide release this weekend.

Ong Bak 2
Everybody was kung fu fighting... in Thailand. Sort of. OK, really a young thief/fighter is made a knight under the very man who killed his parents. It's a classic revenge quest peppered with awesome action sequences. Yes, subtiltles.

Saw VI
Love it or hate it, Jigsaw's back in time for Halloween again. Midnight showing, anyone?
