The Loss of a Tear Drop Diamond
A depressingly beautiful look at a young woman's life on the edge of 1920's Memphis debutante society. Fisher Willow, an outcast from the society by both her father's actions and her own eccentricities, picks Jimmy Dobyne (the son of the head of her father's commisary) to be her escort to all the Memphis debutante balls, parties and gala events. The story turns when Jimmy won't kiss Fisher down by the levee and she loses a diamond earring (one half of a $10,000 pair). As Fisher freaks out, Jimmy misconstrues her words and a slimy old flame of Jimmy's shows up at the party to stir the pot a little more. Things get strange during the party, involving some opium, a postmaster, and a bizarre piano solo/sex-in-an-old-car-Titanic-style scene.

A Town Called Panic
Belgium, I love you! This movie was as fantastique! as a splash of coffee in the morning. Two friends, Cowboy and Indian, have completely forgotten the birthday of their roommate, Horse (yes, they live with a horse. no, they don't live in a barn). The two order 50 kathousand bricks by accident and end up on a wild adventure that takes them to the center of the earth, the depths of the ocean and to the Arctic, where they face off with a mechanical Penguin manned by a bunch of crazy scientists who launches snowballs across the world. Beware, you non-readers and non-francophones, the film is from Belgium and en francais, so it's subtitled. You won't notice, however. You'll be too busy laughing at Cowboy and Indian's hijinks.
Festival Rating: Excellente!
