Phillyist's quick-picks for a rock your socks off start to the weekend.
- For some low cost musical good times that don't involve staying home with your ipod:
Amazing Baby at Johnny Brenda's - $10
Elizabeth & the Catapult at Tin Angel - $10
Stars of Track and Field at the North Star - $12 (Special ALL AGES show) - College Nights are no longer our friend, but they can be yours. If we could get 1/2 price entry into the Independence Seaport Museum you'd find us at the waterfront tonight (in reality you'll find this particular Phillyist at the Princeton/Ra Ra Riot show at the Troc). $5 for a private screening of tattoo film Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry and a tour through the Skin and Bones tatoo exhibit certainly isn't a bad way to start off a Friday. 5-10 p.m. and then you can take your tatooed ass to Tattoed Mom's for some yo ho ho and a bottle of Rum.
- The Legendary Blue Horizon hosts its 6th Annual Cancer Awareness Boxing Event. You won't see Rocky tonight, but you can watch Darrell Jones and Muhammed Tuba punch the crap out of each other for the sake of saving one of our favorite body parts.
- We're just dipping into October and that means it's First Friday time in Olde City again. First Fridays always seem better in the fall. Wander into a gallery for the free wine, stay for the art. It's our favorite kind of walkabout.
- Speaking of wine, the coolest new Museum/Research Center in town, the Chemical Heritage Foundation is turning one year old tonight. Tria wine director Michael McCaulley will be leading the party with vino-related discussions at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 p.m. Free with your new fancy pants wine knowledge: A sample of Spanish cava and a periodic table cupcake from JPM Catering.
- Now, if you're super fancy (read: super rich) you'll want to suit up for the 5th Annual Gravedigger's Ball at the Crystal Tea Room. We wish we could go honor Harry the K with the Friends of Laurel Hill, but alas we are not super fancy and the Powerball drawing isn't until tomorrow.
