- Gunfire erupted yesterday during a pick-up basketball game at Shepard Recreation Center in West Philadelphia. A 23-year-old man was killed and his 19-year-old brother was wounded.
- Republican district attorney candidate Michael Untermeyer has come up with quite the election stunt: he has "had himself equipped with an electronic ankle bracelet to demonstrate how city taxpayers could save millions in prison costs by making more use of monitoring technology for nonviolent criminal defendants."
- In a moment of exceptional parenting, a Delaware woman caused an accident yesterday, and then abandoned her injured daughter at the scene. The mother, Tiffany Hrycek, was apparently worried about two outstanding arrest warrants. Those warrants, and several others related to the accident, were served to Hrycek at her home; her child was turned over to a relative.
- Our neighbors across the river introduced a new emergency notification system yesterday. Called NJ Alert, the system can send New Jersey residents text messages or emails with warnings and instructions about major emergencies.
- Philly native Adam Goldstein, a/k/a DJ AM, was remembered yesterday in a private memorial service in Los Angeles modeled after a 12-step meeting.
- Last night in sports, the Phils beat the Giants 2-1, despite Brad Lidge's scare. The Eagles lost to the Jets, 38-27, with Michael Vick playing QB in the second half. And speaking of Vick, it's official: he'll be eligible to play for the team in the regular season starting week three. In college sports news, Villanova kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to cap a 27-24 come-from-behind victory over Temple to win the inaugural Mayor's Cup.
