Yo, Philly in the News

City Hall 07-31-09

  • So how bad will things be if the state doesn't pass Philadelphia's proposed sales tax increase and pension overhaul? Three thousand job cuts. Trash pickup reduced from weekly to twice a month. Essentially, the shutdown of the Free Library, Fairmount Park, and a couple of other agencies. Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!
  • Another arrest in the Rian Thal-Timothy Gilmore Piazza murders. This makes seven total arrests, including all three suspected triggermen.
  • A second teen has pleaded guilty in the fatal beating of 36-year-old Starbucks manager Sean Conroy at the 13th Street Market-Frankford line stop in March 2008. Charges are still pending against three other teenagers.
  • A 75-year-old Villanova woman has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run accident earlier this month in which a 13-year-old was injured. Insert "old people should have to give up their driver's licenses" quip here.
  • The Phillies put up their second stinker in a row last night, losing to the Giants 7-2. But at least we'll have newly-acquired Cliff Lee taking the mound tonight.
