Normally when Phillyist thinks of American Idol, we think of the likes of Kelly Clarkson and over-produced pop music. Season seven brought a little rock to the competition in the form of David Cook, whose gritty-but-pretty vocals and commercially popular cover versions of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and Mariah Carey's Always Be My Baby, among others, catapulted him to seemingly immediate stardom. This Friday, he'll be bringing his "Declaration" tour to the Keswick Theatre.
Cook's success may be attributed to the in-through-the-back-door success of Idol but upon listening to the album produced before he was on the show, this Phillyist concludes that he would have probably been discovered sooner or later. His music has a little bit of a hard edge, nothing Ozzfest-worthy but definitely listenable. His vocals are most assuredly there and he sings with heart, something we here at Phillyist appreciate. Don't write him off because he was on American Idol and don't be afraid to like David Cook. Phillyist gave him a listen and yeah, we like him. Head on over to the Keswick and enjoy a night of some good 'ol "American" rock.

You won't be able to stop at only one. Seeing and hearing David Cook live is just an amazing experience. Go to one concert, you'll want to go to more. He and his band have worked the songs on the album into "something else". His new covers of other artists really rock. He's one of the few artists who can deliver live as well as in the studio. Beyond his voice and the music, his stage persona is just plain fun. I like a rockstar who smiles.
This is not PR. I'm just a fan. A fan who is constantly surprised by David's talent, humor, humanity and showmanship.
I couldn't agree more! After seeing David for the first time on Friday night I dare say it won't be my last Cook concert. His songs sounded amazing live! What a great talent and a real sweetheart!
OMG, Leigh, you totally wanted to hate this show. I can smell the scorn!
