Its official, Philadelphia is hosting the Olympics.
I don't know who we had to bribe, or who's sleeping with who, but Philadelphia... is home... to the 2009 MOJITO OLYMPICS!
And quite frankly, unless they were willing to fill the pools rum and marathon runners were given delicious, frozen margaritas instead of those little Dixie cups of water, we couldn't be more excited for the actual Olympic games.
This year's Mojito Olympics promise to be amazing. Less than two weeks away and taking place at G Lounge on Wednesday, June 17, seven bartenders from some of Philly's best restaurants (Cuba Libre, G Lounge, Mixto, The Moshulu, Rum Bar, and Valanni) will be competing in a no-holds-barred, three-event mojito extravaganza. With points earned for speed, creativity, and over all taste of a signature drink one bartender will be awarded the gold medal and proclaimed high priest(ess) of cocktails.
All others will be shot and killed.
No, not really.
The bitter taste of defeat is punishment enough.
But here's the best part-its not just a bartending triathlon, its a tasting event! Admission (starting at 35 bucks) covers an open bar featuring 15 different brands of rum, straight up, on the rocks or mixed into minty mojitos. Munchies are also complimentary as are samples of all the bartender's final submissions for Best Of Show concoctions.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for basic admission, but visit www.mojitofest.com for information about the V.I.P and Elite ticket options. For an extra twenty, you can score private Happy Hour from 6 – 7 p.m. before the doors open, where you can meet the competing bartenders and enjoy extra samples of the evening's rums and hors d'oeuvres before anyone else. You'll also score a complimentary goodie bag courtesy of the evening's sponsors which include Bacardi, Tommy Bahama Rum, and Philadelphia STYLE.
There is also an "Elite" option where, for 75 dollars, you'll get special access to the Private Tommy Bahama Rum Room (G Lounge's Mogul Room), bottle service, private top-shelf open bar, and fine caribbean tapas provided by Rum Bar.
Private top-shelf bottle service?
For 75 bucks?
Considering the last time Phillyist was out and about, where we pretty much drank our two-week paycheck, this is pretty much the best deal ever.
You can pre-order your tickets in person at Rum Bar or go online at www.mojitoFEST.com. You're also free to purchase at the door, but we've been told by Adam Kanter, owner of Rum Bar and founder of MojitoFest, that seating for the Elite area and the V.I.P. tickets are limited.
The Mojito Olympics promises to be a highlight of Philly's summer parties, Phillyist can't wait to sit back enjoy all these bartenders have to offer. We're also kinda hoping that some Eastern European bartending coach will see us there, take us under his wing, and train us so that someday, we too will reach the highest level of competitive athlete: the bartender.
