
- Yesterday, an 11-year-old girl was viciously raped in Kensington when a man forced her into a back yard. The victim had to undergo surgery to mend the wounds suffered. A manhunt is on for the rapist, described as a white male, in his 20s, about 5'8" with sunglasses and black hair. If you have a tip please call 215-686-TIPS.
- The GM bankruptcy hit home yesterday as a plant in Wilmington was on the short list. It will cease operations July 31. "GM is not the end of my life," said Cathryn Williams, a worker with 25 years of service to the automaker.
- The Philadelphia Bulletin published its last newspaper yesterday. Publisher Thomas G. Rice informed employees at a meeting that the paper could not afford to operate any longer.
- The City of Philadelphia is coughing up $5.9 million to settle a class-action lawsuit relative to thousands of strip searches by prison guards between 2003 and 2007. Individuals were strip searched after being imprisoned for misdemeanors, traffic violations and other minor offenses. Those people will be paid roughly $600 to $900 each.
- The Phillies beat the Padres last night on the strong arm of Joe Blanton and the potent bats of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. The Phils won 5-3 at Petco Park.
