Ah, summer is nearly upon us. Time to spend our weekends trudging over the Walt, getting scowled at nastily by South Jerseyans who want nothing more than for us to "go the hell home, ya' damn Shoobie!" Time for us to bake ourselves down the shore and wearily drive home in the same traffic, the same scowling, only to work another week and do it all over again. Some weekend, right?
Why not just stay here? Enjoy the atmosphere of the Mediterranean without leaving Center City. It can be done, and done exquisitely as I found out at Positano Coast. Head to the 200 block of Walnut Street, across from the Ritz and up the stairs, and you will find yourself in a world of effortless luxury. This summer, treat yourself to a table in the Sopra Lounge, Positano Coast's indoor/outdoor retreat where you can settle in with friends at one of the booths surrounded by crisp white linen and cobalt tile imported from Italy—you will truly be transported. Thankfully, the atmosphere is anything but stuffy. It's relaxed, feels casual and is quite nice for any occasion. It is a place you can find yourself coming back to again and again. (Ed. note: We at Phillyist certainly find ourselves returning there again and again; see links to our previous Positano Coast writeups at the bottom of the post.)
I went to Positano Coast with my husband, sampling items from all parts of the menu. The Crudo is definitely not to be missed. This special menu of Mediterranean-inspired sushi features some amazing dishes, specifically the Yellowfin Tartare with chives and lemongrass. Tangy and sweet, yet clean and uncomplicated it would the perfect appetizer to share with friends over a glass of Vermentino. In my case however, there was to be no sharing of this dish. I know, I'm selfish. But it was SO worth it. In fact, everything about the entire meal—from the appetizers to the main dishes of sea urchin pasta and steak with broccoli rabe to the amazing desserts, and especially the homemade creamy limoncello—was absolutely top rate. Experiencing this meal in the breezy, chic comforts of the Sopra Lounge makes Positano Coast a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, not to mention shore traffic.
When you go, ask to be seated somewhere where Jesse can take care of you. His knowledge, affability and charm make the experience all the better. Gather some friends, head to the Sopra Lounge and just relax as you enjoy one of the most underrated and enjoyable spots in Philadelphia. This truly is a restaurant you have to experience.
