I've Got a Baby and Ten Dollars... Now What?

I've recently done some crack investigation reporting and have discovered that the economy is in some sort of slump. I've also come to realization that babies are expensive, what with their clothes and diapers and "food." Babies are selfish too: never once has my baby offered to get a job or pick up after herself or do anything to break up the monotony in our day. Its all me, me, me, twenty-four/seven.

Using my exceptional skills of deduction, I've reasoned that if my baby is this self-centered, other babies might be refusing to share the family load as well. During this time of economic crisis I've decided it is my duty to pick up the slack and put together a list of free and next-to-free events and activities in and around Philadelphia suitable for moms and any free loading tot they may be carrying in their wake. You'll find it after the jump.

Enjoy!

...p.s. I don't really think my four-month-old is lazy

...p.p.s I rent her out to Lucky Strike where she finds work as a bowling pin

  1. Come Out and Play: Want to meet other moms but skip the parenting classes and their insane fees? (Seriously, Hall Mercer-I'm looking at you. Three hundred bucks? Really?) Then head on over the nearest playground. Even if your baby is too small to take advantage of the swings and slides, you can just park yourself on a bench and enjoy being OUT OF THE HOUSE. Believe me, you won't be the only gal there with an itty bitty peanut. I recommend hitting a great little park between 2nd and 3rd on Delancy Street called Three Bears, or Seger Park on 10th and Lombard. Seger is especially great if you have a dog because they have a dog run/play area adjacent to the playground. The swings get busy around 10, so head on over! I'll be there...we can share snacks.
  2. Tonight You're Gonna Party Like You Last Slept in 1999: Rittenhouse Square is saluting its youngest fans and the adults they drag along with them. The "Littlest Friends of Rittenhouse" Festival takes place annually in June, and this year's party is going down on Wednesday, June 17th. Starting at 5:30, wrapping up at 7:30, the shin-dig will be held under the Big Tent on the Square. With last year's party boasting a carousel, visits from tot celebrities (think more along the lines of Disney's Belle and Captain Jack Sparrow rather than Hannah Montana), face painting, crafts, and tons of food, this year's kiddie soiree is one event not to be missed. Tickets are cheap (especially if ordered in advanced when they're only six bucks) and if you still aren't convinced, check out the website dedicated to last year's Go Green event. Contact Nicole Melchiorre at 215.266.0708 or ndiso@hotmail.com for more information.
  3. Even Mommies Get the Blues: The DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in Wilmington, Delaware is coming! The DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in Wilmington, Delaware is coming! Mom and kids with an ear for Davis, Mingus, and Ellington should mark their calendar because this week long, FREE jazz festival is coming soon, starting June 15th and running to the 21st. While there are free street concerts every night, the best days for families are 20th and 21ist with concerts beginning at noon.
  4. 4.) Let Me Hear You Clap Your Hands! The Philadelphia City Institute at 1905 Locust St. has a fantastic program called Clap and Tap Time for Babies and Toddlers that is absolutely free. Intended for children aged 6 months to 2 1/2 years old, this weekly class incorporates stories, rhymes and songs and the new session starts soon! Check it out every Friday at 10:15 a.m.
  5. 5.) Swedes....Now That's Good Reading: The Charles Santore Branch of the Philadelphia Library, located at 932 S. 7th St., along with the American Swedish Historical Museum will be sponsoring a super story and craft session on June 15th, starting at 4 PM. Based on some of the great works of children's literature (Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren, The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Anderson, The Book About Moomin by Tove Jansson, and the beloved folktale, "Three Billy Goats Gruff") the day promises to be fun for both mom and baby. Seriously, these are stories you'll know, its not going to be like, some crazy story hour with books that go far over the head of all the kids and most of the adults. Also, I was the smallest goat in my elementary school's production of Three Billy Goats Gruff and I'm looking forward to seeing the original source material.

Next week I'll give you a whole new crop of bargin entertainment for you and your mini-me. Until then, see you on the monkey bars! My daughter will be in the stroller over by the bench
