The New York Times' Travel section ran a piece today that calls Philadelphia a "destination city"—something we could have told them years ago. We're happy that The Times has finally decided to show the City of Brotherly Love a little affection (instead of that Sixth Borough crap from a few years ago), but we'd like to point out that their recommended schedule is almost as improbable as the route of the Rocky run.
Unassuming New Yorkers, beware: you're going to waste a lot of cash on cab fare (we know you're not going to venture out on SEPTA) if you try to follow your hometown newspaper's advice: Silk City Diner and North Bowl are within walking distance of one another if the weather's nice, where Chifa (which the NYT recommended you visit in between) is back in Center City, eight short blocks from City Hall, where you theoretically would have started your day (per the paper's instructions). And as far as your Saturday outings go, Fabric Row is five blocks from the Italian Market; going to the Franklin Institute in between is highly illogical, seeing as it's almost an hour's walk.
We should mention that we don't fault writer Jeff Schlegel's Philly picks (although the original Sabrina's is far superior to the one on Callowhill), just his misleading schedule. Take it from us, New York Times readers: look at a map before you follow the column's advice too closely, and then take the money you save on cab fare and spend it on an extra PBR (or seven!) at North Bowl.
