"Hipster Grifter" Kari Ferrell Maybe Didn't Turn Herself In

Kari Ferrell's Philly Mug Shot Updated information below.

City Paper blog The Clog is home to a post by CP contributor Sam Tremble about how he set up and snitched out Kari Ferrell, leading to her arrest by 6th District police late Sunday night. Ferrell, dubbed the "hipster grifter," has allegedly made a career out of scamming people, playing on their sympathy, their generosity, or their tattoo fetishes.

Tremble, a contributor to CP and a member of the Philly band Hermit Thrushes (not be confused with the band that later became Dispatch), had encountered Ferrell previously, and hatched a plan to bring her to justice on a warrant issued in Salt Lake City (second row from the bottom). He spoke to the cops in Utah, and worked with cops in Philly, to put Ferrell in a cell. Her bail has been set at $250,000.

Tremble's story seems to conflict with a report by the Daily News that Ferrell actually turned herself in—a claim that police spokesman Sergeant Ray Evers confirmed to them on Monday.

So what gives? Tremble's story does mention that she didn't resist the arresting officers in any way, but can that really be construed as turning yourself in? Don't you have to make the call yourself (as the Daily News story reports Ferrell did), or show up at the station with your hands held out before you and your guilty head hung low?

We're not sure, but her extradition hearing is set for May 15th and, depending on the outcome, she may be remanded into the custody of the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Our sister site Gothamist has been covering Ferrell's weird story since last month, when the New York Observer first published a story on her.

Gothamist covered her confession, which included some shout-outs—seriously—to some of the media outlets that have covered her, including her former employer Vice Magazine, The Observer, and Gawker.
