Green Scene: Guerilla Gardening

GGlogolarge.jpg
We all know there are a few more criminals in Philadelphia than we would like. Well, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!

We’re talking about guerilla gardening here folks, which is a misdemeanor and technically illegal, but unlikely to get you arrested. Guerilla gardeners take over vacant lots and other public spaces that have become ugly trash heaps and green it up. Usually by cover of night, armed with shovels and rakes, they remove trash and plant flowers and other greenery.

In fact, guerilla gardening is becoming so popular, ABC News did a story on the movement last week.

If you’re low on cash, you can even just buy some seeds and make seed “bombs.” Take a biodegradable plastic square and fill it with seeds and dirt. Toss it onto any vacant area and let the bomb explode.

Before you know it, Philadelphia will be bursting forth with beautiful plants and flowers and maybe even lose the moniker “Filthadelphia.”

I have one in my neighborhood who has taken over a slice of the hill across from her home. She put in evergreens that have recently been decorated with little blue Christmas lights, flowers, a variety of different bushes and a park bench!

We were the ones in the ABC segment. Check out the website at http://LAGuerrillaGardening.org
