First Friday Fun

La Libertad es una palabra enorme by Cirenaica Moreira The Cubans are coming to Northern Liberties' Projects Gallery this First friday and through May 30 in a traveling exhibition titled Aqui Estamos (Here We Are in Spanish), which is not only curated by the author of this entry, but also represents the first ever appearance in the Philly area by some of the top names in Cuban art from both Cuba and the Cuban Diaspora.

This show, which has been exhibited already in Norfolk, Virginia and Washington, DC, features work by Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Kcho, Cirenaica Moreira, Marta Maria Perez Bravo, Sandra Ramos, Roberto Acosta Wong, and AimeƩ Garcia Marrero. Additionally, the show also includes several Cuban artists represented by Projects Gallery: Alejandro Mendoza, Alex Queral, Angel Ricardo Ricardo Rios, and Ramon Williams. From there walk over to N. 3rd Street for another different art experience in Northern Liberties. Philadelphia Sculptors is the only professional organization of sculptors in the Philadelphia region, and through May 17 they have teamed with 950MODE, a 1 & 2 bedroom and bi-level condominiums space in Northern Liberties to give contemporary sculpture a temporary home inside the walls of this sparkling new condominium. From May 1- 17, select units at 950MODE will be transformed into an extended art gallery as sculptures take up residence on the premises. The public is invited to view the art and tour the new units during the First Friday Opening Reception on May 1, 2009 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm. Wine will be served and a chocolate tasting, featuring Antoine Amrani Chocolates, a new venture of local Philadelphia chef Antoine Amrani, (who previously worked as the Head Pastry Chef of Le Bec Fin restaurant) will also be offered. Make sure that you check out Cheryl Harper's outstanding ceramic works that make humorous but intelligent pokes at political figures and James Fuhrman's contemplative steel abstractions. 950MODE is located at 950 N. 3rd Street at W. Wildey.
