Kisses are Fat Free: A Minute with Richard Simmons

IMG_0018 copy.jpg Now that Phillyist has had some time to sample Ocean Spray's new Cranergy drink, we understand why Richard Simmons is promoting it. One Cranergy and you turn into your own bouncing-off-the-wall Richard.

When Phillyist got to 30th Street Station yesterday, Richard was already yucking up a storm. On a mission to get all the Regional Railers excited for Thursday, Richard was hugging, jumping, dancing, and singing his way through 9am. Oh, and helping the facilities maintenance crew install lightbulbs.

Richard told a biologist standing next to me that he was awful in biology in school. "My favorite subject was cafeteria!!" he exclaimed. "That's how I got to be 200 pounds," he said to me. He then turned to me, gave me a hug and said, "Honey, kisses are fat free!" Then he laid a big, fat smooch on my cheek.

All fun and games aside, Richard is still a fitness personality. After our passionate kiss, he told me about his recent trip to DC to promote the FIT Kids Act. Richard believes every child should have healthy options available to them: healthy lunches, recess, gym class. Things that most of us probably took for granted when we were in elementary school.

It's no secret that people think Philadelphians are fat. A recent report on the State of Philadelphia from the Pew Charitable Trusts states that “Philadelphia is not the picture of good health. Consider that 64 percent of adults are overweight or obese and 27 percent smoke, a percentage that appears to be on the rise.” (via)

Perhaps we all need a little more Richard in our lives.

Oh, I'm sure he hit the old bathroom in the back while he was there.

Richard's a great guy, but can someone for the love of God make the man over? The Sideshow Bob 'fro, tank tops, and banana hammock shorts gotz to go!

superbien - i was going to get him to design my audition outfit for next year's cheerleading tryouts! he seems to know how to work a bedazzler like nobody's business.

Hah! You've got your eye on something @ lululemon screaming for a bumblebee embroidered in yellow and black rhinestones, don'tcha? ;-D

perhaps i should have just gone to YOU as my designer/stylist!

Sure! I'll help! Unfortunately J. Crew sold out of what I initially had in mind for you after Michele Obama wore it to the G20 . . . What are your thoughts on sequined green hotpants and bright white pirate boots? ;-P

Ha ha ha!

Richard Simmons came to Chicago, too. Our writer, Lauri Apple, gave him a painting that she did of him. He seems like such a sweet guy. He even sent Lauri a nice note to thank her for the painting, and tell her that he hung it up in his office!
