Film: (500) Days of Summer
Future Screenings: None. Sadly. But will be released July 17th!
Dear Diary:
Love sucks. Hall & Oates rocks. Is anything fate?
Sincerely,
Miss Bee
Bidding itself as the anti-romantic comedy (a nonromcom?), (500) Days attempts to redefine quirk in a film that follows the folding and unfolding (and then some more folding) of the relationship that every one of us has been in at least once. Perhaps armed by the power of the soundtrack in their iPods, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel charmed their way into my heart quickly without seeming entirely saccharine.
Don't let the nonromcom genre fool you—the film has plenty of canoodling, IKEA, and canoodling in IKEA. But even Dude (a self proclaimed romcom hater) laughed during the entire movie. Word to the wise: if you hate the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, I would consider skipping this one.
When it's all over, the soundtrack is happy, the colors are awesome, the writer went to Penn, and no one will like Jenny Beckman. And you may never give someone a Hallmark card ever again. So call it the new Garden State, Little Miss Sunshine, Juno before she got knocked up, or those new Comcast commercials. Call it whatever you want. I call it delightful.
Festival rating: Very Good
