Foodsday Tuesday: Foie for Five

Mmmm... Foie Hugs for Puppies, the awesomely-named foie gras-hating organization that now seems to have become The Humane League of Philadelphia, has provided more than a few dinnertime laughs for me. It's not that I hate animals. It's just that with all of the other crap going on in the world, the fact that a group of people is assembled to hate on my dinner, which may or may not consist of fattened goose liver, seems so arbitrary and pointless that I can't help but laugh.

Nor can the nearly twenty Philadelphia restaurateurs who will be participating in this year's Foie Gras Week. From this Friday, March 13, through Thursday the 19th, several of Philly's top restaurants will be offering special foie gras plates for the low, low price of five dollars. Seeing as foie gras can sell for hundreds of dollars a pound, this should not only warms your stomachs, but also your recession-crippled wallets. The five dollar specials will be available for dinner at all participating restaurants, but the Foie Gras Week organizers suggest you call the restaurants ahead of time to find out exactly what their foie offerings are.

And if anyone comes by to protest, just read them Chef Chris Cosentino's "Shock and Foie," a treatise on why his restaurant won't stop serving the stuff, and why no other restaurant should, either. The letter is about 3,000 words long; if you've got the stamina to read the whole thing aloud, you're sure to win.
