Phillyist Playlist: M. Ward and The Vivian Girls at the Trocadero

M. Ward has been on a steady ascent since the release of his prior Post-War. He did that relatively unknown thing with some girl named Zooey that’s called like, Him & Her… OK, I know it, and I like She & Him. I just think it’s a little overrated! I’ve got to say though, since listening to Matt Ward’s newest record Hold Time, it’s easy to pick what project I favor. I’ve always had a thing for M. Ward’s versatility and throwback style, Americana guitar, and unmistakable drawl. It’s nice to see people looking forward to his newest record and the sold out Troc show tomorrow. He’s also playing with the wonderful fuzzy punk stylings of the Vivian Girls. Highly recommended (even by record shops in London)!

The Transfiguration of Vincent is one of my favorite records ever. It’s the perfect summer slouch feel-OK-even-if-you’re-blue record. Some songs on Hold Time, like the Johnny Cash-y “Fisher of Men,” are no different. However, expanding on Post War, there are things I’ve never heard before. “Shangri-La,” features Ward’s own vocals tracked over each other to create harmony. Usually, I think it’s a little pompous of a lead singer to only use his vocals in harmonies on a studio album. But this just sounds beautiful and understated. The record has quieter more solo-led moments, yet more of an emphasis on the band, more musical elements supporting throughout, all leading to some of his most exciting music yet. I know it’s only February, but this is a soulful, consistent, and vibrant record that makes for an easy selection for one of my top 10 records of 2009. Listen immediately!
