Twestival: Charity 2.0 Funds Clean Water For Everyone

Twestival lets local Twitter users show off their generous side and have a little fun, too. Tomorrow night, Philadelphia's thriving Twitter community, in which we're increasingly trying to participate, will descend upon the Get Happy Pub to, well, get happy. But it's all in the name of charity, a concept that's anything but foreign to Philly's burgeoning 2.0 community.

Read more about the Philadelphia Twestival (on Twitter, follow @phltwestival) after the jump.

They'll We'll be there for a Rock Band Tournament, a 50/50 raffle, food and drink specials, and camaraderie. But, while those things are more than enough to get your average Joe out to the bar, Philly's Tweeters will be doing it all for a good cause.

Enter the worldwide Twestival. It involves Twitter users in over 100 cities and will last for 24 hours.

That's a lot of charity. So, what's it all for?

Water.

That's right, proceeds will all go toward the various projects run by charity: water, a 501c3 organization devoted to bringing clean drinking water to everyone, everywhere. Their charity: ball, held on December 15, 2008 in New York City raised $450,000, so these guys know how to throw a party.

But one party in one place is just so analog. This time, they're going global, and, to do it, they're going digital. In fact, two of their biggest sponsors for the event are Amiando, an "online event management" platform, and TipJoy, a micropayment service that enables your site visitors to leave you donations as big—or small—as they decide.

Couple the money, prizes, and resources these and other sponsors bring to the table with the generosity of Philadelphia's Twitter community, all over the city, and you have the perfect storm of giving.

You're going to pay to get in the door, you're going to pay more to participate in the Rock Band contest, and you're going to be able to buy additional raffle tickets (you get one free raffle ticket with your admission ticket) for $1 each. But the cash doesn't go to the bar, or the (volunteer) organizers, or to mama Twestival (visit her on the web and at Twitter to donate to your city of choice). Instead, all of that money will go directly to charity: water.

Check out the web site for a list of all the prizes and sponsors.
