It's a new year, and new hopes abound in the air, and this Friday is the first Friday of February and new art will be on display in our area's art galleries and venues.
Gallery Joe has an exhibition of drawings by British artist (now residing in Brooklyn) Simon Frost. Titled Oculus, the exhibition is in the Gallery's Vault Gallery. Oculus runs concurrently with an exhibition of works on paper by Sabine Friesicke in the Front Gallery. Oculus is Simon Frost’s first solo show in Philadelphia. Included in the exhibition are seven circular forms rendered in either silverpoint or graphite on paper. Each circle is composed of hundreds of vertical lines running from edge to edge, with minute variations in thickness and tone. Frost uses two types of silver point, fine silver and sterling, creating extremely subtle changes in color that will soften over time. The uniform paper size (28 x 22 inches) as well as the diameter of the circles (20 inches) reinforces Frost’s long-standing interest in repetition and mark-making. German artist Sabine Friesicke's show is titled Gold and runs concurrently with Simon Frost's. Gold is Friesicke’s first solo show with the gallery as well. Most of the works in the exhibition are gouache on paper ranging in size from 22 x 30 to 45 x 45 inches. As the title suggests, these works are explorations of the color gold, and the interplay between rich warm reds to cooler blues, and blacks. The shows run through Saturday, February 21, 2009. Gallery Joe is located at 302 Arch Street at N. 3rd Street.
