Green Scene: Eco Events

morris arboretum.jpg With the disgusting gray weather outside, we’d like to help you dream of green. Here’s a sampling of some of “green” events going on in Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley over the next few weeks.

Lesson in Sustainability: Everyday Efforts for Going Green — January 29, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Main Auditorium, Academy of Natural Sciences, 19th St. & Ben Franklin Parkway. Young Involved Philadelphia is partnering with the Academy of Natural Sciences to bring you this forum on how sustainability can impact your home, workplace, and community and suggest some sustainable solutions for everday use. Owl Prowl — January 31, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Schuylkill Center, 8480 Hagys Mill Road. Meet the center’s resident owls in their rehab clinic and take a hike to look for owls in the wild. Free for members. $8 for non-members. More information here.

Winter Wellness Walks — Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. through March 28 at Morris Arboretum, 100 Northwestern Ave. Join arboretum guides to a walk around Morris Arboretum’s gardens. Walkers follow two mile long loops. Free. More information here.

Pennsylvania Green Economy Forum — February 5th, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sykes Student Union- Ballroom West Chester University, 110 W. Rosedale Ave., West Chester, PA. A panel of local experts will discuss green jobs, the federal economic stimulus package, energy, and the economy. Free. More information here.

Maple Sugaring Celebration (and Pancake Breakfast) — February 7, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tyler Arboretum, 515 Painter Road Media, PA. Ever wonder how we get maple syrup from maple trees? Find out at Tyler Arboretum’s annual maple sugaring celebration. It’s open to kids of all ages and starts with a hike to a tree tapping demonstration followed by a demonstration of how sap becomes syrup. Finally, head inside to feast on pancakes. $9 for adults, $5 for children (3-12), free for kids under 3. More information here.

Local Living Economies: Green, Fair, and Fun talk — February 11, 7:30 p.m., Haub Executive Center, 5th Floor of McShain Hall, St. Joseph’s University, 5600 City Ave. Join Judy Wicks, founder of the White Dog CafĂ©, as she discusses local living economies. Free. More information here.
