Sasha Fierce Beyoncé Knowles in a blonde Etta James wig? No thanks. But then you add in Adrien Brody as Leonard Chess, Mos Def as Chuck Berry, Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters, and other stars like Cedric the Entertainer, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and well, okay maaaaybe. This film is a musical biopic set in the 1950s and follows the lives of the influential label Chess Records and their stable of singers. Sounds somewhat bland but depending on the soundtrack could be a decent little bit of light holiday entertainment.

Nobel Son
Alan Rickman plays a pompous Nobel Prize winner whose son has been kidnapped. The movie filmed a while ago and has been kicking around in the can since then—never a good sign. With its contrived plot of ransom and double cross, it seems to be the waste of the talents of Rickman, Mary Steenburgen, Bill Pullman, Ted Danson, Danny DeVito, et al. Add this to your list of 2008 Bad Movies.

Anita O'Day: The Life of A Jazz Singer
This is documentary about Anita O'Day, one of the few white female jazz singers who rivaled the talents of the greats such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Plagued by years of alcohol and drug abuse, failed marriages, arrests and jail time, O'Day's life sounds like a tragedy. But across seven decades, she managed to keep touring and recording. The film includes clips of her performances through the years and also features interviews conducted shortly before she died.

Punisher: War Zone
This is not a sequel to The Punisher but rather a re-imagining of the Marvel Comic the Punisher. Similar to what happened with the Hulk, where we saw Ang Lee's version starring Eric Bana, then just a few short years later came the Edward Norton version. Neither film was a solid hit, but the first was superior. We wonder how this reboot of the Punisher will compare to the (not that great) Thomas Jane version.
